    Intermittent BSOD Issue 0x00000124

Hi. My mobo, cpu and ram were from overclockers.co.uk as an overclocked bundle I purchased a few years ago. I have been having an intermittent BSOD issues for the past few months.

I had tried reinstalling windows and had reset the BIOS to default settings but the problem was still occuring. Recently my OCZ vertex 2 failed. I am not sure if this was somehow related. I tried this drive in another computer and had the same result, drive is visible in BIOS but the OS does not see it. I reinstalled windows on my storage drive for the time being and have ordered a new SSD.

Today I took apart my computer to give it a good clean and remove dust, took off heatsink and reapplied thermal paste, gave wires a tidying etc. I then reinstated the overclock from the BIOS profile. SpeedFan was showing my CPU idling at around 51C. I ran Prime95 stress test to see how much the temperature would rise. I did not see much rise in temperature at all, quite quickly though I got a BSOD.

I have attached SF Diagnostic grab. Any help figuring out my problems would be greatly appreciated.

I should add that before my OCZ vertex failed, BSODs occurred most often when playing games, Civilization V and the Sims 3 in particular caused it. However I never had a blue screen when playing Minecraft.

First stop overclocking, chances are you have already damaged the CPU by overclocking if your getting crashes from running prime95:

    Code:
    [Processor Information (Type 4) - Length 35 - Handle 0004h]
      Socket Designation Socket M2
      Processor Type Central Processor
Processor Family 1dh - AMD Athlon Family
      Processor Manufacturer AMD
      Processor ID 420f1000fffb8b17
Processor Version AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 955 Processor
      Processor Voltage 8dh - 1.3V
      External Clock 201MHz
      Max Speed 3200MHz
      Current Speed 3820MHz
      Status Enabled Populated
      Processor Upgrade ZIF Socket
      L1 Cache Handle 000ah
      L2 Cache Handle 000ch
      L3 Cache Handle [Not Present]
      Serial Number
      Asset Tag Number
      Part Number
you could also try updating your BIOS:

    Code:
    BIOS Release Date 05/21/2009
the bios is very very old and can some times cause this type of error.

other than that this particular BSOD is indicative of hardware failure but does not provide much in the way of diagnostic information because the pc is shutting its self down to save its self from further damage. but looking at the error record we can see that it is being reported as an L1 cache error:

    Code:

    Thanks Dsprague.
I have updated to the latest non beta BIOS release and loaded optimised defaults. I have run Prime95 for 1.5 Hours without any crash so far, so looking better at the moment.

Glad to hear things are working out, if you don't have another BSOD within a week please mark this thread as solved.
