    BSOD on Wake: ntoskrnl.exe SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION 0x0000003b

    Hi everyone,

I found this forum by googling "BSOD after sleep". I've lurked for about a week trying to solve my problem by reading other similar posts. Though I've followed a lot of the steps I've seen here, nothing seems to be clearing up my BSODs.

I've attached the appropriate zip file, and I've filled out a lot of the relevant information about my system in my profile.

BSOD behavior: every BSOD comes when I wake the computer from sleep, but they don't come every time I wake it. Specifically, I have my case's power button set to S3 standby in the BIOS. I use the button it to send to standby and to wake it up.

    The 8 BSODs are 7 SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION 0x0000003b, with one KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED 0x0000001e. 6 mention nsoskrnl.exe, 2 mention ks.sys.

Related(?) behavior: I've been having trouble with my wireless adapter, a TP-LINK TL-WDN4800 Dual Band N900 PCIE. When I first installed it (including the drivers and network management software), it was fine. It picked up both of our router's bands. Lately it hasn't been working well. Often upon reboot, it isn't recognized by Windows or it doesn't see both bands, etc. Often Steam starts in offline mode because it thinks there's no connection.

    Steps already taken:
    - updated wireless adapter drivers (though the install behaves as if they were already up-to-date)
    - updated MB and graphics card drivers
    - updated SSD firmware as needed (1 of the 3 SSDs I have wasn't current)
    - ran MemTest86 for 8 passes: no errors
    - updated BIOS

Other info: I recently imaged my boot drive from one (smaller) SSD to another (larger) one. There were a few hiccups but I don't remember the specifics. I sorted those out and never got a BSOD though (the system ran smoothly for several weeks until about a week ago). More recently I installed a new heatsink for the CPU, added an OCZ SSD that I got from a friend, and I migrated my Steam games installs from an old Raptor to the OCZ SSD.

Thanks for taking any time to look at this, and of course any help is greatly appreciated. If there's anything I've excluded, please let me know.

Please either update or uninstall Total Recorder as all your logs show this as causing issues:

    Code:

    Driver: TotRec8.sys
Refers to: Total Recorder WDM audio filter driver
Website: Sound recording tools: Total Recorder - captures any audio from the Internet, records audio from CD, microphone, line-in, converts any sound formats to WAVE and MP3

You also have this driver present which is known for BSOD:

    Code:

    Driver: xusb21.sys
Refers to: XBox USB wireless controller

If after removal / updating you still experience further crashes, then post up a new log.

    cheers

I've uninstalled Total Recorder (used it once, forgot it was there).

I also uninstalled xusb21.sys, and installed the lastest version from your link - it seems to be the same version.

I will try this out for a bit and see if the BSODs keep coming - it won't take long to see if they're gone.

    Thanks for your help, Dave!

Sadly I got another BSOD last night - it was upon waking the computer, as the others were. I'd like to post the dumps, etc., but I'm getting an error when I try to upload the zipped folder:
    500 - Internal server error.

There is a problem with the resource you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed.

I've tried on Chrome, Firefox, and IE. Is this a server-side problem maybe?

    Edit: thanks for checking!

Edit: I tried uploading a txt file and it worked fine, but the zipped folder is still giving me the error.

The Admin is looking into it now and will get back to me shortly.

I finally got the upload to work. In the meantime, a few more BSODs have occured (I reran the SF tool, so this zip is current). At some point I uninstalled my wireless adapter and plugged directly into the router, and the BSODs continued.

    Thanks again for any help!

    Hi,

Your latest crash isn't showing anything conclusive:

    Code:

    STOP 0x0000003B: SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION
Usual causes: System service, Device driver, graphics driver, ?memory
An exception happened while executing a system service routine.

Uninstall driver xusb21.sys, as you correctly pointed out it looked like the same version.

    Test your RAM:

Take memtest. Run for 8 passes and test each stick in a know good slot for an additional 6 passes.

    https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html

       Tip
Run these tests overnight, pay particular attention to #3 in tutorial if you receive errors

The goal is to test all the RAM sticks and all the motherboard slots.

As your logs are not showing anything definitive:

Run Driver Verifier to scan for any corrupted drivers which may be causing problems, this program works by running various stress tests on drivers, in order to produce a BSOD which will locate the driver; run for least 24 hours:

Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable

Before enabling DV, make it sure that you have earlier System restore points made in your computer.

If you fail to get on the Desktop because of DV, Boot into Advanced Boot Options > Safe mode. Disable DV there. Now boot normally again, and try following the instruction of enabling DV again.
If you cannot boot in Safe mode too, do a System Restore to a point you made earlier.

    Cheers

I actually ran a memtest before my OP. 8 passes cleared. Right now I'm getting no BSODs, and as far as I can tell, it's due to one of two things, or both:

    1) As I mentioned earlier, I uninstalled the drivers and utilities for my wireless adapter, and physically removed the card itself. I'm using a regular network cable to connect to the router.

    2) Though I haven't uninstalled xusb21.exe, I've been very careful to disengage the xbox controller from its wireless receiver before putting the computer to sleep (i.e., turn off the controller).

Since I've done these two things, no BSODs through at least 8-10 sleep/wake cycles. I'm going to keep using my computer in this way for a few more days at least, and if no more BSODs, I'll test my theory by reinstalling the wireless card and then (separately) leaving the xbox controller engaged when putting the controller to sleep. I will try to remember to report back here in case it may help others.

Thanks again for your suggestions, Dave. If my tests of these two things don't identify the problem, I'll try your suggestions next.

By the way, for anyone reading this, is there a good alternative to the xbox wireless receiver driver? I found this, but I've had trouble getting it to work properly.

    Thanks,

    Chris
