Win7 x64 Pro freezes randomly

    Win7 x64 Pro freezes randomly


    Win7 has been randomly freezing for the past month, having installed about 2 months ago. The computer freezes up, no response from mouse, keyboard, or monitor -- However I am able to see the screen (no BSOD) as long as it doesn't go to sleep.

    I've tried a couple potential solutions. Switched power management to Performance and turned off all sleep / power down options. Cleaned registry with registry cleaner. Ran chkdsk. Tried to update all drivers (seems all are up to date by win7 standards). I've looked through the Event Viewer but I am no expert and do not know how to troubleshoot System Events.

    If anyone has any tips/tricks/workarounds/potential solutions I would appreciate any help. Please see my sysinfo below:

    Total lockups can be some of the most difficult problems to troubleshoot deterministically, mostly because it is so difficult to extract info at the time of the problem manifestation.

    Emphasis should be placed on trying to determine whether it's a software-layer or a hardware problem, especially if the hardware is relatively new and untested. To that end, try the following as a suggestion:

    1) Run the box in safe mode (or [safe mode + net] if you must) long enough to convince yourself whether the same lockups occur there or not. If not, that is a very good indicator of a software root cause.

    2) Don't boot to Windows at all but instead go into the BIOS configuration menu (probably 'Del' on startup on your machine) and stay there for hours or even over the weekend if necessary. Should the machine lock up during that time - even once - it's a hardware-level problem.

    Hard freezes usually relate to memory problems of some sort. You should run Memtest to rule out the memory being the problem. I like the Memtest for Windows version which you can download here. MemTest for Windows Download Page

    Statistically, it's not the "exact same problem", though it may be the "exact same symptom".

    You might want to try running memory diagnostics as chev65 suggested, and the steps I mentioned to the OP.

    I will try this. Been having similar issues and the non-windows memtests haven't turned up anything. Is this windows based test able to pin down exactly set of bad RAM?

    Ran the pc in safe mode -- froze after 20mins or so of idling.

    Ran the pc in bios only -- froze after a couple of hours idling.

    Ran the windows memtest -- froze after 16% of the memory had been tested

    I'm at my wits end here everyone. I've heard that Memtest86+ boots from a CD and tests memory without having the OS boot. Is this true? I think it is my first option for testing hardware issues. Someone on another forum also suggested using FurMark 1.7.0 to test the video card as well.

    I think it's entirely safe to conclude that the machine has hardware-level problems. Freezing in the BIOS, before any software is actually loaded and active, means the machine is ill.

    If it's still under warranty, you might want to contemplate taking it back and letting them sort it out. Otherwise, I don't think memtest would tell you anything you don't already know. Even if it managed to complete its run, and it detected "memory errors", you couldn't be entirely certain whether it really was the memory or the bus/mobo.

    The "freezing in the BIOS" thing makes me think it's not the memory, though I could eeeeasily be wrong. If you're down to troubleshooting it yourself (because it's out of warranty), try stripping out as much non-essential componentry as possible and retesting the BIOS freeze thing.

    I would like to troubleshoot myself -- the machine itself was repurposed from an office setting to my personal use. It is old, no warranty. Memory is newest hardware component -- I installed 4GB of Crucial brand DDR2 about 4 months ago.

    I'll remove secondary HDD and CDRW drive, and I will test each stick of memory.

    It does seem like you were right, its probably not the same problem. First, i tried to do the memcheck in w7 and after a few hours in froze. Yesterdays night, i opened windows on secure mode and run the memtest again... and it has run without problems during the whole night, and the memtest with 116% has found no errors. Seeing that its a different problem, should i open another thread or shall we continue here? Any ideas of whats happening to my computer?
