got it to load the system restore menu, but now it can't see any restore points, which I know both you and I have made since this whole fiasco started.

I am 95% sure that this is a hardware problem, but I think I will try and reformat the hard drive just to see, thankfully I baked up everything I needed before it got this bad.

Can you think of a better alternative?

I came to the same conclusion as you did.

Could be a the motherboard due to the heat the PC has been under for a prolong period of time
combined with the power issues you are experiencing.

If you have everything backed up performing a clean install is worth a shot.

    Share your findings,
    Good luck!

no this thing is screwed, it won't even let me reinstall windows, I get a BSOD that says "Bugcode_USB" when it is unpacking the files.

I guess it is time for a new laptop.

I think that the problem was I exposed it to pretty high humidity using it outside at night near a lake. I assumed the inside of this thing stayed at 120F+ most of the time, so I wasn't worried about dew forming inside of it, but I may have been wrong.

Any parting thoughts before I send this thing to the junk heap?

I put in the windows 7 install disk, told it to do a fresh install over the original partition, which was the entire harddrive.

Did you try to delete the partition, then create a new one first?

That method got it through installation, but now the new windows won't boot up. It stuck at "starting windows services"

    Are you positive it's stuck?
How long has it been in that state?
