Why would you inactivate the Recovery partition which was booting Win7? Who told you to do that? No one would have advised that as it is reckless. I am wary to continue helping in such a case.

Mark Recovery Partition Active then run Startup Repair - Run up to 3 Separate Times to see if it will start. If so go back to the plan to copy your data over to a new data partition you create Logical using Partition Wizard Create Partition - Video Help. If not install Win7 to a partition you create during install in the Unallocated Space. Do not do anything other than these choices.

If the Dell Disk says Win7 Reinstallation DVD and clearly has SP1 then you can use it, otherwise use the latest official installer provided for your licensed version in Step 1, burned to DVD or written to bootable flash stick with tool in Step 2 of Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

There is no evidence in the Disk Mgmt screenshot that you have a EFI install which shows a normal MBR HP factory preinstall. Did you change settings in your BIOS to enable UEFI from Legacy BIOS? If so change them back as that may be why it's not booting. You want a normal install which should have no UEFI choices when booting the installer. If in doubt post back camera snaps of the BIOS choices related to UEFI, CSM (Compability Support Module) or Legacy BIOS. You want UEFI disabled, CSM and Legacy BIOS enabled.

I think I am confused, as far as I know the recovery PARTITION was never run. I'be had the recovery DISC and have been booting into recovery console from there. The reason why I inactivated the recovery partition is because the tutorial Startup Repair - run 3 times said I could only have 1 active partition and I thought the OS partition should be active.

I will try marking recovery partition active and running startup repair. For some good news my win7 install usb did start running the install process (I canceled) so the problem was a bad ISO burn. The UEFI enable was a step to make PW usb run, I do change boot setting back to legacy in the next step. I think it's something to do with my usb, two separate PW ISO burn had the same issue. I am not sure I am explaining this well, but the win7 usb will boot under normal boot settings.

Hi all, just wanted to report that setting sata to AHCI and then reinstalling win7 fixed my iastor reboot problem perfectly. I have my data on the old partition that I crashed and the current OS on the formerly unallocated space. Unfortunately system image is not possible (I don't have a third partition that is large enough to store the image) so I will keep my fingers crossed that nothing else will go wrong with my laptop before I get home. Thank you all for your help. Anna

Greetings from Dublin, Anna and all.

So glad to hear this news, Anna. I was concerned for you.

How is performance now? Do you notice any difference using AHCI without enabling IRST for the 32gb SSD cache?

Do you see the 32gb SSD drive in Disk Mgmt now? Will you post back a screenshot when you get a chance? There are some options for still using it, now or later.

Were you able to delete all other partitions except Data and it remained safe? If not we need to see where the System flag landed.

    Gregrocker,

There really isn't much of a performance difference between AHCI & IRST, except perhaps startup from boot & wakeup from sleep is a little slower (maybe 10-20 sec longer). But I don't reboot often except for windows updates. Other than that I haven't noticed anything different. I'm not sure if that means my laptop wasn't configured optimally by Dell or maybe SSD advantage isn't as much as I thought it would be?

I attached the Disk Management for before & after. Now I seem to actually see the entire 32GB SSD, plus I have the 100MG System Reserved partition (for the first time ever) but it's on the SSD? My gut feeling says this configuration is odd but should I be worried?

I ended up not deleting any partitions during the reinstallation because I wasn't sure which ones were important. So I simply had windows install in the unallocated space without messing with anything else. I would like to delete them if they're unimportant (for example, do I need the recovery partition if I have a recovery disc & have a windows install usb?)

The new Win7 on C is booting off the System Reserved partition on the 32gb SSD, as signified by the System flag. It may also have the Hibernation file on there though yoú´d have to look on both C if it placed the new one there.

What's not on the 32gb is the paging file since IRST is turned off to use AHCI. You can decide if you want to keep it that way later. Nothing that can be done to reconfigure either as long as you have no backup drive and are relying on the old Win7 partition for that. I hope you moved files you can't afford to lose to Skydrive as I suggested earlier.

The 32gb shows up once it's unRAIDED. We´ve even helped users install Win7 on it. As with any correct clean install if you'd want to try that later all partitions should be deleted during the install.
