BSOD playing Total War: Rome 2, error 0x124

While playing Total War: Rome 2, my computer froze after hitting End Turn within the game. My PC restarted itself and I received the following BSOD info: Bugcheck code: 0x124 (0x0, 0xFFFFFA80116C6038, 0x0, 0x0)
    Error: WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR.

Please advise as I had just bought this game but unable to progress without getting the BSOD.

    Thanks!

Unfortunately, your installation is counterfeit, please format and install with a genuine key.

My friend built the PC for me and installed the operating system for me too. He did something to the BIOS to allow for the use of windows 7 without a key. I have two hard drives, drive C using SSD with the operating system and drive D using HDD with all my software and programs, I'd hate to have to lose all my documents and files along with reinstall all the programs on D, can I do a fresh install just on C using a genuine key of windows 7?

Its hard to know exactly how the activation exploit has been deployed and know exactly whats its done, but if you reinstall OS all programs will need to be reinstalled also

I will try with a fresh install and after I have reinstalled all the programs to check back and report. So basically the counterfeit version was the culprit?

It's a possibility, and against forum rules anyway. Also, from a BSOD perspective, it's pointless attempting to debug a counterfeit system due to the amount of security exploits and alterations with the operating system.

Okay, I found out from him that he used a OEM emulation for the BIOS for the win 7 activation, but he is currently in a different country and can't help me do a clean install of the BIOS and he told me that if I'm not familiar with BIOS, don't tamper with it or find an expert. How do I go about doing so? Thanks!

I had fixed it, it turned out that it was the BIOS. An update to the most recent BIOS fixed it, and now the PC is running faster than before too.

But how did you activate Win7? You were running an illegal copy.

Install and run http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 to post back it's output file.
