BSOD while downloading Dishonored from Steam

    Hey guys,

I've been having BSoDs for awhile now and after sending it to a tech to get looked at it I was told with a shrug and a frown that he couldn't narrow down what the issue seemed to be. As a result, I kind of put getting it fixed on the back-burner for a couple months because I had a macbook pro that I could use for the time being.

Well, today I decided I'd boot it up and see how it ran again and when/if it crashed I would resort to getting some help online. Thus why I'm here. I was running everything just fine until I hooked up my wireless adapter (Rosewill brand) and opened Chrome. After a few seconds I got another BSoD. Then I booted up again and everything ran just fine for awhile and I was doing my normal routine. I watched a youtube vid or two, I played a little bit of Super Meat Boy, I opened up Eclipse to see if my dev environment was still intact. Everything was going fine. At this point, I developed some cautious optimism. I decided, why not, I'll update my graphics card drivers to the latest version and go ahead and install Dishonored from Steam (I was like an hour away from finishing the game when I started BSoDing :|). At this point I started installing a few other things that I need for programming on my computer (Sublime Text 2 and Powershell pretty much). Randomly, my computer decided to BSoD again and I resolved to just coming here to see if I could get to the bottom of this once and for all.

I have memtestx86 on a CD that I plan on running when I get a chance tomorrow. Outside of that I figured I would give you guys the SF_Diagnostic file and see if it proved fruitful.

If you guys need anymore info just let me know and I'll try to respond quickly! Thanks!

Takadimi, Welcome to SF :) .

Your story and the bugchecks tell different stories.
You're describing an issue with regards to wireless activity via your adapter and the bugchecks blame
the GPU drivers (which crash on two driver versions which could be a place for concern) but let's keep it simple for now and if the problems continue we will go from there :) .

The wireless adapter's driver is very old.

Please update,Post back with the results!

Alright, so I just installed the new drivers for the wireless adapter. I think that is probably a pointless venture though.

I ran MemTextx86 this morning while I was in class and returned to find that it had reported its max number of errors (65665+ I think). So I guess we can probably assume it has something to do with the RAM haha :P

That still leaves me a bit confused as to why it would be crashing as a result of something to do with the GPU drivers...

Outside of the obvious fact that I need to buy new RAM modules (hopefully that's all that the bad MemTest results are pointing to) I'm a bit stumped as to what my next move is...

Thanks for taking your time to help me with this YoYo, I'm getting pretty desperate to get back to using this thing that I spent time building and money saving up for!

Welp, I should have said installing, not installed those new drivers. My PC froze completely while trying to run the install (No BSoD)...

Even one error is enough to stop using the RAM .
I did you use memtest86 (as mentioned above) or memtest86+, we here tend to suggest using the 86+
version, I personally never used the non-plus.
Assuming that the RAM is bad I hope you replaced it or at least removed it from the system?

You have only three dumps in the file you uploaded and two of them pointed to the GPU
(the third didn't show much) so I wouldn't be worried just yet as it can easily be the RAM's fault.

BTW, do you still have Driver Verifier enabled?
If you do please disable it, Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable

It was definitely the non-plus MemTest. Do you think that'll be a big deal, the results from seem pretty definitive...

I'm going to place an order for some new RAM today and just go from there, I guess. I'm just hoping it isn't a faulty GPU. RAM is a pretty inexpensive fix, a new GPU isn't...

As far as Driver Verifier goes, I'm not sure. I have no plans on booting up my PC until I install the new RAM modules, after that I'll make sure and disable it.

    Just a small update.

I decided to run memtestx86 on the individual RAM sticks. The results showed that (after only one pass) I had one RAM stick pass with 0 errors and the other resulted in the same max number of errors as when I ran it before. I ran both of these from the same slot to make sure it wasn't just an issue with a defected slot on the motherboard.

Does that seem definitive enough to say that the issue is with this one stick of RAM. If so do you think it would be safe enough to try and run the computer with just the one stick of 4gb until I can buy a new stick next friday. With that in mind, would be a good idea to do a clean install of windows 7 assuming that the bad RAM probably has corrupted some stuff.

I'm not super knowledgeable about any of this, so if all of that is complete bullshit I apologize :P

Yes it is safe to run the PC using only the good RAM' it will also provide a good test to
see if something else is at fault.
It doesn't really matter if you reinstall Windows or not but if you feel like going ahead with that idea
I wouldn't stop you as it is always a good idea every now and then.

    Okay...

So I have been running it on and off since I took out the bad RAM and everything seems to be running stable enough. I put it through the test of downloading Dishonored and that went fine. I even played a good 45 minutes worth of the game on highest settings and everything and it took it like a champ!

Hopefully that's enough of an indicator that the RAM was the source of the problem the whole time. If anything changes I'll post again. It seems like I might have just gotten my PC back though, which makes me very very very very happy

Thanks for all of your help, YoYo. This place is definitely an invaluable resource for troubleshooting these kinds of issues. If I ever have any problems again I'll be stopping here before I take it to any tech!
