Freeze about 5-10 seconds after log in

This issue just started occuring today and it has me completely stumped. As I recall, I don't believe I was doing anything out of the ordinary (browsing youtube and facebook) when my system locked up then restarted after about 20 seconds. After I booted back up to the log in screen, typed in my password, and hit enter. I watched the little windows circle swirl for about 5-10 seconds when it froze again.

Here are the things I've tried so far that have not worked. I booted up into safe mode and tried a system restore point. I tried disabling all the services and booting up normally, which worked but it was basically as good as safe mode so I didn't know where to go from there. I tried disabling all non microsoft services while in safe mode and booting normally but that didn't do anything. I tried running a windows repair from the cd and from the boot menu option and it didn't detect any problems. Finally I got fed up with everything so I fresh installed the operating system over the old partition. It did a first time boot fine, installed updates then prompted the restart. Upon trying to log in after the restart, it froze once again.

My gut feeling tells me it might have something to do with hardware because I don't understand how a fresh install could fail like that but I also don't understand what could possibly cause an error like this. I would really appreciate any help anyone could offer me because I'm flat stumped and frustrated .

    Scan with your anti virus
Scan with malwarebytes. Perform the long scan and be sure to update before the scan

Unless you formatted at the install

If these are negative, we will go from there.

What would there be to scan? I fresh installed windows just an hour ago, it updated, then restarted and the issue arose again.

If you had a virus on the first OS and did not format, it could still be present.
Lets go one step at a time so we can rule things out and move on.

I will admit it is probalby hardware.

Ill stay one step ahead, you scans were negative. Here is my check list of freezing problems. Give hardware problems priority. Dont disregard a step because you feel that it cannot be the cause. You know how life is just the same as me. Skip one idea and that will be the cause. Lose something, you always find it in the last place you look.

Scans came up negative so I will go through this list. I'll update if I solve the issue or continue to have problems. Thanks for the help.

Very welcome, If the list does not help, maybe we can come up with a solution, anyway.

Turns out it was my power supply. I did a few of those tests on the page without finding anything, when a friend on mine suggested it might be my power supply. I swapped in his just to test it and I booted up fine. I guess it makes the most sense out of anything but it makes me sad to think I've only had that power supply for just under 2 years....
