    BSOD akitmpag.sys

    Hello. I have a Dell 15 Inspiron N5010 laptop (ATI Radeon HD 5470) with Windows 8.1 installed and it has been working fine till 2 days ago, running most games perfectly fine and adequately without any troubles, until I started a new one called Lineage II High Five. I noticed the laptop started overheating and then it shut down on me. After letting it rest for a while, I tried again and same thing happened and then BSOD starting showing up stating Video_TDR_Failure and a technical error about akitmpag.sys and it wouldn't let me get to to the desktop until I got in the Safe Mode and disabled the display driver in Device Manager. After that, I checked online for solutions and most of them stated that this is probably due to dust accumulation so I took the laptop to a technician and he opened it and cleaned it. However, the BSOD still didn't stop showing, and he said I should try installing Windows 7, and I did, yet nothing had changed, the second I installed the Display Driver and restarted, BSOD popped up again (doesn't mention Video_TDR_Failure on windows 7). So to summarize it, I can't get to desktop without disabling my display card driver or else it shows a STOP 0x116 BSOD. I tried updating drivers but that didn't work as well, didn't expect it to do either.

    The DMP files are attached. Appreciations to anyone who tries to help.

    Hello Ahmeddaa and welcome to the Forums,

    We only have a few BSoD debuggers at the Forums, so it can take a while before one gets to your thread, please be patient.

    ----------

    Code:
    Windows 7 Kernel Version 7600 MP (4 procs) Free x64
    Product: WinNt, suite: TerminalServer SingleUserTS
    Please install Service Pack 1 and all available updates.
    Please read this before installing; How to install Service Pack 1

    ----------

    Also, where did you purchase your version of Windows 7 Ultimate?

    ---------
    Usual cause: Failing GPU driver.
    More info Bug check 0x116.
    Driver reference table: atikmpag.sys.

       Information
    A stop 0x116 BSoD can never be solved by "downgrading" the version of Windows you have, as it won't change the GPU driver at all.

    ----------

    I see that you have already tried this, but please try upgrading the GPU driver again by doing the following just to rule it out;
    Please download the latest driver for your GPU from here and remove the old driver by using Driver Sweeper as described in this tutorial.

    ----------

    After installing the latest driver, please restart your machine and preform the following hardware test;
    Stress test the graphics card using Furmark GPU Stress Test.
       Information
    During the test please check the screen for artifacts.
    The purpose of this test is to make your machine crash and create dump files so that we can pinpoint the cause of your problem.

       Tip
    Please run Furmark once when your machine has just started, and once again when your machine has been active for several hours.

    As we can see the stacks point to dxgmms1.sys, which is the DirectX driver from Windows Update.

    ----------

    Please download and install DirextX 11.1 by downloading the KB2670838 update.
    Please read before installing; How to download and install DirectX.

    ----------

    After this, please report back how Windows is running. If there still are BSoD's, please follow this;
    Arc said:
    Run Driver Verifier for 24 hours or the occurrence of the next crash, whichever is earlier.

       Information
    Why Driver Verifier:
    It puts a stress on the drivers, ans so it makes the unstable drivers crash. Hopefully the driver that crashes is recorded in the memory dump.

    How Can we know that DV is enabled:
    It will make the system bit of slow, laggy.

       Warning
    Before enabling DV, make it sure that you have earlier System restore points made in your computer. You can check it easily by using CCleaner looking at Tools > System Restore.

    If there is no points, make a System Restore Point manually before enabling DV.

       Tip

    Good luck and keep us posted,

    I downloaded a new driver again, and the BSOD still didn't go, so had to disable the driver again. Since the driver is disabled, the laptop's working fine and there wouldn't be a point to run Furmark or driver verification since it won't crash or anything will happen.

    Hello Ahmeddaa,

    Thanks for the update:)

    Please follow the other suggestions and reinstall the GPU driver after installing SP1 and DirectX 11.1 to see how it goes.

    ----------

    Also, again, where did you purchase your Windows 7 Ultimate license?

    ----------

    Out of interest, what Anti Virus are you currently running and which one came pre-installed on your machine?

    Good luck and keep us posted,

    It says the update is not applicable for your computer when I try to install a new Direct X.

    A friend of mine gave me the Win7, so I'm not really sure. Should I revert back to Windows 8.1?

    I don't have any Anti Virus and I can't really tell which was the one pre-installed.

    Hello Ahmeddaa,

    The update only applies to Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8 and 8.1, so you should install that before installing the update.

    ----------

    Please check with what version your laptop originally came;
    You can see this on the CAO sticker, it will look like this;

       Warning
    Do not quote your product key or post an image of your COA sticker!

    ----------

    If your laptop originally came with Windows 8, then yes, in my opinion it would indeed be best to revert back to it. Do note that it is recommended to format your hard drive during the installation.

    If you choose to reinstall Windows 8, then please create a thread at our sister Forum, the EightForums (you will need to register again there). Simply link this thread to your thread there so that they know what steps we already have taken.

    ----------

    That being said, I would like to determine if your Windows 7 installation is genuine;
    Please follow the Genuine and Activation Posting Instructions and post the log that the tool created between [code][/code] tags in your next reply.

    ----------

       Warning
    It is highly recommended to have an anti virus program as your machine currently has no defense against malware!
    Please download Microsoft Security Essentials from here;

    1. Download the file and save it to your desktop.
    2. Double click the file and follow the on-screen instructions.
    3. Restart your machine after installing MSE and please run a full scan and report back anything found.

    Good luck and keep us posted,
