I prefer the Avira Free for Win7 32 bit, and the Avast Free for Win7 64 bit - but that's just a personal opinion.

    Hi -

Boot into SAFEMODE to get some breathing room while you back up files. The NVIDIA drivers do not load in SAFEMODE.

Are you backing up in preparation for a re-install ... ?

i got rid of the McAfee and Norton, ran a full backup, and so far still up and running.. I did download AVG9.0 to try it out and see if any issues reappear..

I usually do complete back ups beacuse of the data on the system to keep all my photos and other files backed up.. and maintain a schedule to keep the backup up to date... I keep saying nee top put one of the backups in the fire safe.. hate to lose all these pics of the kids and trips

The freezing when the mouse hits on users could be RAM. Logon to another user account & and see if the freezing persists. Use the hidden admin account if no others available -
    START | cmd.exe | RIGHT-click on cmd.exe - type the following -

    net user administrator /active:yes

Logoff your account. Administrator is waiting.

as for switching users because of a ram issue.. it freezes and I can't log in as any user

    athrx.sys BSOD

I've been experiencing frequent BSODs blaming athrx.sys (the Atheros wifi driver), specially when I have Bittorrent running. I remember having updated this driver a while back using Device Manager's own "Update Driver" function, but it hasn't solved the problem.

    The currently installed driver is:
    athrx.sys 2.0.0.75 09/06/2009

BTW, this notebook came with Vista factory installed, and I'm not running any antivirus software (dangerous, I know).
