BSOD when using the internet after Windows update + other issues
Everything was working just fine, until I responded to a Windows update stating I needed to install important updates on Saturday, Oct. 5th.
Anyways, here it is
1. First, I do not have an SF file available, because I cannot get SF Diagnostics to run on my computer. I have tried downloading the most recent version, and there is an error message regarding Visual basic. I have attached that below.
4. Everything was stable on my system until October 5th, when I received notice that there were Important updates to install. These had apparently installed previously, had failed the first time(?). I follow that with a question mark, as I am not sure this was true. Anyways, installed again, and was marked as successful. Hit "Check Updates" and Windows update indicated they had to be installed again. Tried again, and entered into the endless loop others have described. Restored the computer to the point before installing the updates. Downloaded the appropriate "Fix-it" for Windows MicrosoftFixit50123.msi. Ran that. Then installed again. Thought things were good. Nope.
3. After this started experiencing BSODs when online. Both in Chrome and in FireFox (64-bit) browsers. I do not use IE, so cannot comment on that.
4. I have run Malwarebytes Anti-malware, and nothing was found (quick results attached). Quick Scan only. Previous Full Scans showed no infected files - Computer scanned once a week (Full scan).
5. I have run Microsoft Safety Scanner - 1.0.3001.0 both under Quick and Full scan. No infected files were found.
6. I have Microsoft Security Essentials - running all the time, and updated regularly. Nothing has been detected or flagged.
5. Have run sfc/scannow several times: no problem files are found.
6. Have run chkdsk/r/f several times. Indicates that 76 records needed to be reparsed. Usually run after a BSOD has occurred.
7. After messing with this for a while - rebooted enter recovery and tried to restore to an earlier point (before I installed the updates). Received an error (did not write it down) in that it could not recover the restore point successfully. Restarted, and was at the restore point anyways before I had installed the the updates on October 5th. Right now I have 28 Important Updates and 3 optional updates waiting to be installed.
8. Have run CheckSUR - Update Windows6.1-KB947821-v28-x64.msu several times. And consistently get the same messages. Logs are attached below. However, will note that the files flagged have been present (and incorrectly named) since May 2013, and had not previously caused problems.
9. Additional issues: Having problems recognizing that I am connected to the internet (icon has a red cross through it although it is connected and working fine).
10. Certain extensions on Chrome are no longer working. Just noticed this, not sure if it is associated with the problem that I am having. However, the AdBlock plus and the WOT extensions are no longer functional. This only occurred after I started having issues.
11. Have had issues with Windows Update causing instability on my computer before. Received help here on a previous thread.
12. Have had instability problems with the nvidia driver and the OS since initially receiving the computer in 2009.
13. Things had been stable for a while. However, the failed (?) rollback mentioned above did not resolve the BSOD's - they are still occurring.
