Can I fix a Black Screen of death using the command prompt?

My computer is black screening just after the Windows logo comes together during boot up. I've spent two days on line trying various cures but none work. I've pulled the cmos battery and drained the capacitors. I've tried to boot in safe mode. I've let the computer sit for hours just letting it do its thing. I've run memory repair through the boot menu. I have a windows 7 rescue disc and I've tried everything on the disk and had no luck. Using the rescue disc I can get a command prompt. Are there things I can do through the command prompt that will help me finally get booted up? I have ubuntu installed as part of a dual boot system. I was able to use it until I pulled the cmos battery. Now it doesn't recognize my password and the date is wrong.(it's been that kind of week). However that leads me to conclude that the problem is more Windows related than hardware related. My system is a simple custom build: Windows 7 Home Premium SP1, Intel dh61cr circuit board with an i5-3350p processor, 8 megabytes RAM, A TSST 1 terrabyte optical hard drive. I did read through the the instructions regarding the various memory dumps prior to posting a BSOD query, but I can't do any of that stuff because I can't boot up in the first place. In summary I have a Black screen interrupting the boot process. I can get to the boot menu. I have a windows 7 rescue disc that allows me to get a command prompt, and allows access to files on the hard drive. What I need is help using these remaining tools to get booted up. If this isn't possible I assume I'll have to re-install Windows completely. (sigh) Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to reply.

After the screen goes black I have a visible mouse cursor but no text cursor.
Trying to boot in safe mode doesn't work. I get a lot of text scrolling by and then a black screen.

Using the rescue disc I tried system restore, but got no positive results, I also tried to go back to the last successful boot and that didn't work either.

The Windows repair command in the boot menu was also a no go.

I have my data backed up in the cloud.
I don't have a Windows install dvd.

Question: As I stated in my original post, I was able to successfully boot into Ubuntu prior to pulling the cmos battery. If the GPU were bad would I have been able to do that?
