I'm almost sure it's the Nvidia driver. For some reason this friend's Acer attracts the 9200 driver from WUD when it only has Nvidia 8200. So in the past I've just rolled back to 8200, but it creeps back in on Updates unnoticed by owner.
Can someone confirm this and make any other suggestions needed. Thanks !

The version of display driver installed is a known bad one. For GeForce 9200 (or even for 8200), it is better to use NVIDIA DRIVERS 314.22WHQL. But before installing this one, better you sweep the leftovers of the earlier one. That one is very problematic.
This is a problem too, Archie. Windows Updates keeps delivering Nvidia 9200 driver even though the Aspire x1300 desktop has 8200. I was able to stabilize it previously from BSOD's by installing the 8200 WDDM driver.
Linksys only shows v.1 and v.3 drivers for that model. It says v.2 on it. I'll try v.3. I also have a newer N USB adapter to try.
Changing back to 8200 WDDM v 1.1 driver 8.15.11.8593 there are strange artifacts on desktop including badly rendered icons which won't delete or drag. I have the same thing on my desktop after recent Updates. Have you heard anything?
Greg, the display driver that is installed here is 311.06 WHQL, released during last February.
This one, and its previous one are the worst ever display drivers. Almost everybody using it had problems with these two. But 314.22 is the last most stable release. It never fails by itself only. If there is display crash despite of using 314.22, you may be sure that the issue is with the GPU.
About the latest version, I faced problems myself. So switched back to 314.22. The users report issues with the latest one, I suggest them to do the same :)

What's confusing is Windows Update has only ever pushed through Nvidia 9200 for two Aspire x1300's here that show in specs to have Nvidia 8200. Should this be happening? There are BSOD's on both of them with the 9200 driver from Feb, so should we try the latest above even though it's labeled for 9200 and not 8200?
But the latest 8200 driver archived in Dev Mgr is from 2009 so maybe it's intended to use 9200 drivers for this Nvidia 8200 GPU?
Well, that is something I have never experienced. From the uploaded data, all I see that it is GeForce 9200.

Whatever, I think you may opt to not update this particular driver via windows update and use the recommended one from the nvidia's site. If still the artifacts are there, stress test the GPU?

That Windows Update 9200 driver from 10/31 seems to stabliize it.
The artifact seems connected to his slideshow gadget. He has also had his Weather gadget go buggy, but in the same way mine has after the latest Windows Updates - so it may not be related to the crash but just a buggy Update.

The BSOD was a proper combination of network and display drivers .... both of them were failing there. In that situation you need to see the situation without that weather gadget.
