BSOD on startup, unknown error, startup repair running too long

As the title suggests, my Acer Aspire has been running startup repair for over 20 hours following a BSOD yesterday. I'm not sure if it's worth the wait so maybe you all can shed some light. Yesterday I was stressfully trying to search for something (using Chrome) and the website I was on froze; admittedly I slammed the heels of my hands down on the laptop at that point. The site unfroze after less than 30 seconds, I continued using my laptop without incident, then let it hibernate for about an hour. Started up fine after that, and at that point I was beginning to rip a DVD (one that I owned; I just wanted the files on my computer) using a program that I've used successfully in the past, but the rip failed. So I began using VLC instead, and hadn't actually started ripping any files when my laptop froze. I had been trying to point to a file path for saving but hadn't saved anything. The laptop was completely unresponsive after several minutes, so I hit the power key to restart, which is when I got the BSOD. It flashed too quickly for me to read or remember anything other than the word KERNEL. I've been wracking my brain trying to remember if it said kernel error or kernel memory error or what.

After the BSOD I had the option to start normally or in startup repair; I hit "start windows normally" but it went to repair anyway. It was on the grey screen with the cursor but I thought it had frozen again, so I did another hard restart. No BSOD this time, but again the options for normal or startup repair; this time I hit startup repair, waited 5-10 minutes, and it started actually running startup repair. It's been doing this for over 20 hours at this point; the HD light on my laptop is not on. Not flashing, nothing.

I give all this information because I'm trying to decide if I should continue waiting or if I should punt on the startup repair and try to troubleshoot. I'm afraid that if I shut down the laptop, I will damage the hard drive. I did not run a chkdsk on it, but I'm anxious to know whether it went into startup repair because of a memory error or because of a damaged hard drive from my slamming my hands on the thing in my stupid impatience. Am I wasting my time? I can keep waiting, but I'm wondering if anyone's had experience with this to know a) if I should just cancel now, remove the HD and try to salvage information from it, then reinstall Windows 7 or b) if I should wait longer and hope for the best.

Okay well the Startup Repair froze. I shut down the laptop and took out the hard drive, put it into an external housing, and the files won't read. I'm running a recovery scan now.

I'm going to mark this as solved seeing as I'm pretty sure now that I damaged the hard drive and that's what caused the BSOD, but feel free to respond anyway.
