went to bed at 2am with laptop running fine, woke up to bsod (assume there was an update?) took me two days of running chkdsk mem test system repair (all saying nothing found) ive added no new hardware or any games, system restore will not run, it says there are no restore points, when i try from disc it wont work either, not had bsod since, (the bsod said 0x000000ED 0xfffffa80044a4CDO 0xffffffffC0000185 0x0000000000000000 0x0000000000000000)
i have managed to get laptop to start in normal mode but once it gets to the desktop, the whole thing freezes up, i cannot move my mouse cursor, or type in any commands and have to reboot, no matter what i try i cannot get any further
does anyone have any suggestions please?

edit: my laptop is a medion akoya running on windows 7 64bit

Windows 10

Hi cybermum :).
This sounds like a defective HDD to me :\ .
How does it run in Safe Mode?

warning   Warning
The Following Method Should NOT Be Performed On An SSD!

Testing the HDD:
  1. Perform a Disk Check | Disk Check- Scroll down to OPTION TWO of the tutorial and use the /R switch in the CHKDSK command | chkdsk C: /R.
  2. Then Post the Disk Check results following | This Tutorial.
  3. Once back in Windows, download Crystal Disk Info and post a screenshot (multiple shots if you have more than one drive).
  4. Download SeaTools for DOS if you don't want to use a CD to test the HDD you can use YUMI Multiboot USB Creator to create a bootable USB (instructions are found at the bottom of both pages).
  5. If SeaTools for DOS is unable to recognize your HDD:
  6. Visit HDDdiag and follow the instructions | Or follow the instructions below.
If SeaTools For DOS does not recognize the drive;
Boot into the BIOS using the *Fx key.
Look for an entry called SATA Mode (or something similar), it should be set to IDE / AHCI.
It's probably set to AHCI which is why SeaTools doesn't recognize them in the DOS environment.
Set it to IDE then save and exit usually by pressing the F10 key.
Now boot into SeaTools and it should detect the drives.
Start the Long Test and let it run.
Upon completion don't try to boot into Windows as it will only result in a BSOD, go back into the BIOS
and change the SATA setting back to what it was in the first place.

Let us know the results.

i tried to run the seatools disc but it isnt working, i changed it to IDE and to read from drive, but all that happened was that it tried to run but then looped back and tried to fix itself in repair mode :/
i then followed the other instructions and downloaded the file for my hd (toshiba mk2035gss) and tried again but the same thing happened.
im a bit dense when it comes to stuff like this, so i think i may have missed something? im currently booted in safe mode.

i tried to run microsoft fix it and said i had issues with windows update but it wont run in safe mode
also when windows logs on, it tells me it has failed to connect to a windows service i dont know if that means anything?

interestingly, just gone into msconfig. if i click on selective start up and tick use original boot configuration, windows comes on without freezing but theres nothing working , no internet no sound etc, if i reboot in selective startup and tick both that and load system services, then reboot - it starts to freeze again, ive looked at whats there and theyre all microsoft services, not sure if this has anything to do with it?

ive been diddling in the settings all night, not sure what ive done but my laptop is on, in normal mode and everything seems to be working for now, except my volume, it will not turn on no matter what i try, it tells me the audio service is not running, at the moment, it has decided to download 19 windows updates, and is now asking me to reboot...( certain this is what stuffed it up in the first place)
i darent do it in case it all goes pearshaped again as ive no idea how i got this far tbh!
any clues to getting the volume fixed?
thanks in advance

Windows 10

Thanks for the updates !
That is interesting, but using selective startup is somewhat like safe-mode with networking.
Please upload a log of Autoruns to shed some more light on the subject;

Disabling the wrong entry may result in Windows not booting properly or not at all!
Make sure you know what you're disabling.

  • Download Autoruns
  • Run Autoruns as Administrator
  • At the top go to Options> Filter Options...
    • Check these:
  • Click the little floppy icon at the top to save a copy of the startup.

BSOD during startup for normal mode. Can only start in safe mode.
I had this machine built just over a year ago, and only had occasional crashes (no particular activities seemed to generate the issue). About 2 months ago the crashes became more persistent, and upon restarting the machine would have trouble loading normal mode. At the screen that reads "welcome"...
