    BSOD with new RAM

    Windows 7 x64

    I bought this:
    G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000) Desktop Memory Model F3-17000CL11D-8GBXL - Newegg.com

    I had this:
    Crucial Ballistix 2GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Desktop Memory Model BL25664BN1337 - Newegg.com

    With one stick in I can get into bios and it tries to start windows, but then fails and then I get BSOD error:
    irql is not less or equal

    With two sticks in it won't even get past startup. I can't even get into BIOS.

    Is thier something I'm supposed to configure while I have 1 stick in? Here's my specs from cpuid.

    Ok, well looking at the screenshot it looks like it is still running at 1333MHz and the timings are off too.

    You need to set the ram up correctly in the bios. I would start with the timings, set them to 11-11-11-30. They are currently set to 9-9-9-24 which will be the root of your problems. Once set to this it should boot just fine. If that works then go back to bios and alter the ram speed, it's currently 1333MHz and obviously your new ram should be 2133MHz. I am not sure if your CPU memory controller can handle that speed, but try it, if that fails drop it to 1866MHz and if that fails then you will have to settle for 1600MHz, but hopefully it will work at the higher speed.

    Paul.

    Well I don't know what I'm doing. I can't find any timing settings, or what I'm supposed to change. Paul if you could help me out here? This is what I'm looking at:

    On the 2nd screenshot, you have "DRAM Timing Mode" it is currently set to Auto, I would change that to manual and then have a look again.

    Ah here lies another problem. I was in this menu before, it's blank.
    It says:

    =========== Channel 1 ===========

    =========== Channel 2 ===========

    Just blank... nothing there. No options. Nothing on the sidebar.

    So just to confirm, you changed the "DRAM Timing Mode" from Auto to Manual and then entered the "Advanced DRAM configuration" section below and that is all it says?

    I will have to have a good think about this tomorrow then, it is certainly more tricky than I expected.
