the laptop is only about two years old so maybe the battery is going. it's never hot though, warm yes, but never hot. i've never had problems with the battery on this machine but maybe that is the problem.

i'll run those tests again and see if i come up with anything.

really appreciate the help, even if i have to take it to someone at least i've tried everything myself first. thanks guys! i'll post again when the tests are finished.

    RM see this

    CLEANING LAPTOPS

Whatyou can do is to check the air intake aperture and the "rad" and todo that shine a very bright light into the fan aperture and look through fromthe outlet grill
    1. You will see if there is a lot of dust in the fan intake and fan blades and2. you will see if the "rad" is blocked in any way when you lookthrough from the outside.

Now to clean you can blow the dust out using compressed air
but first make sure youinsert something into the fan blades before you do - to stop the fan fromspinningas spinning the fan with air will cause it to spin at muchhigher revs than it was designed for and can wreck the bearing.
The rad you can use those chenille wire play things to very gently clean therad from outside the machine and again blow the dust out. It is fiddly buteffective.

I would strongly advise against sticking a wire into a laptop. Touching something or making two things connect through the wire can destroy the whole thing.

There are plastic tooth picks and skewers that could do the job.

Yep I know what you mean B but the chenille are not really that bare and there are no electrical contacts inside that aperture which is basically a plastic "pan". There is no danger of the cleaners getting into the workings of the laptop unless of course oner shoved more than half a metre of it in the resistance to clean is around half to three quarters of an inch, and that is how far one should go only. The problem with using anything stiffer risks bending those "rad" fins.
The thing is that blowing air from inside the fan aperture is usually sufficient to blow the crud through the rad fins the chinelle is really just to loosen it:)
