Thanks for the suggestions all. I think I'm just going to buy another sister board for less than $10 and see where I get. If it's not the fix then I may either scrap it all or see if I can pick up a used one on eBay with a broken screen or something on the cheap and swap parts.

Well shoot. I got the new sister board finally. Popped it in, buttoned it all back up, booted into the BIOS, plugged the power adapter in and then blank, just like before. So it doesn't appear that the missing chips there were the cause. Nothing on the main board looks suspect, couldn't find any other physical damage... Any ideas?

Maybe I need to replace the motherboard?

For that damage to occur, the USB port had something plugged in and the laptop dropped. The next suspect part would be the disk drive, if it's not a SSD. If you were able to get into the BIOS, did you check all the hardware and see if it's recognized? You might try booting into a thumb drive with Windows on it.

The disk drive is fine, or at least I'm almost positive it's not the fault. I've ran a few memory tests, all with no errors, so I'm pretty sure the RAM is good. I took the hard drive out completely. When I'm in the BIOS, clicking arrow up/down repeatedly, the instant I plug in AC power the laptop freezes up. That shouldn't happen. Also, it won't boot from anything (flash drive, live cd, hdd, etc) when the AC power is plugged in, also not normal. I was able to run a live CD of utilities, but I have yet to try a live XP disk, I'll give that a try. But even then, I'm not sure if that'll help much as before I wiped the HDD to do a clean Windows 7 install, I could boot into safe mode and it'd run in safe mode with networking till the battery died.

This almost seem like there's something wrong with the power plug or socket., or the power transformer. What I'm thinking is maybe the socket moves a bit when you plug it in and shorts out?

Well when I had the thing torn apart it didn't look loose. As previously mentioned I've tried another power adapter with the same results. I don't think it's the battery as it charges and discharges properly. In regards to the power port, if I have the battery out and the AC plugged in and turn on the laptop it should boot, but when I do this it just sits at a black screen. I guess I could try pulling upwards on the cable to see if it's loose and I get past the black screen, but that doesn't seem probable.

Tried jiggling the power cord around and in the jack with the battery removed, never lost power. I swear I had a live XP disc but I can't find it, I'll have to get one or maybe a live linux distro and see if it'll boot up on those. I just don't know what else it would be besides the processor, maybe something super small I can't find on the motherboard, or... I just don't know. Soon here it's going to be trash, or perhaps I can pick up a broken one on ebay for cheap and use as a donor.

It's a mystery for sure. If you could find a board for it, it is worth a try if you're up to it and it's cheap.

If the battery is completely dead, it may draw too much current from the AC-DC converter to run the PC too. Let the battery charge with the PC off for a full day. That or the battery is bad.

I've already done that. The battery works fine. It'll fully charge with the laptop off, so it's not that.
