reading dump files

When reading dump files; what is the easiest way to figure out the culprit in terms of what everything in a dump file is pointing to as the reason for the dump file happening? Is it whatever the string is pointing to is the culprit or something similar? I am not a expert in reading dump files; but; I will take a crack at answering them if i feel i can answer accordingly and i do want to have some more insight on this so i can stick it in my head somewhere lol. Thanks, Matt
