Windows 7 Boot BSOD

    Windows 7 Boot BSOD


    Ok I am running the paid retail version of Win 7 64-bit Home Premium. About 60% I boot computer up into Win 7 i get a BSOD. The computer could be restarting or just turning on and I will randomly get this BSOD. Usually after getting the BSOD I will have to force shutoff computer to reboot it. It usually will give the BSOD a couple of times until being able to successfully log inot Win 7.

    I have only had this problem with the final versions of Win 7. Like the RTM 32-bit and 64-bit versions and this retail version.

    I thought this was going to be fixed when I actually paid for Win 7 but I guess that's just me giving a excuse for a problem that I didn't know how to fix.

    I do not know why it has been doing this since it never occurred in the RC and I assume that Windows installed the same drivers in each version.

    I have attached all the files that I thought would be necessary in analyzing this problem. If you need any more info just ask.

    A quick look at the dump file shows that the ATI video driver is probably blamed (although this can be a hardware issue with the video card itself). Some of the dump files are corrupted, so I'm not posting the contents.

    Please download the latest version of the video driver from the ATI website
    Then uninstall the current video drivers from your system using Control Panel...Programs and features...Uninstall a program.
    Then install the freshly downloaded driver and monitor for further BSOD's

    okay I uninstalled the drivers I had even though they are the same ones I reinstalled in there.

    I did read though that the ATI graphics driver still doesn't support Windows 7 so I believe that could be the reason for the BSOD.

    Though I still do not understand why I never got any BSOD during the RC

    Today at work I saw a STOP 0x116 error that was caused by video hardware. In this case there were video artifacts in MemTest86+ (so we were able to rule out problems with Windows/drivers this way).

    Based on the opinions of others and the recent stuff that I've seen, I'm willing to venture a guess that this is more likely to be a hardware issue than a driver issue. So don't be surprised if the problem recurs.

    Hmm well it is getting better after reinstalling the driver. Only happens once before I can get back in instead of repeated times. But there are times when it doesn't appear.

    So the hardware issue would only have to do with windows 7 then since this has never happened on any other OS.

    I have an integrated graphics chip so would that mean its time for a new motherboard or just go ahead a buy a graphics card?

    Idk still find it odd that it has only happened on final version of Win 7. Well we'll see how it progresses.

    I would try a new graphics card - but buy it from a place where you can return it if it doesn't work. Don't forget to disable the onboard card in the BIOS.

    Here is the latest minidump file.

    Will have to see about investing in a GPU. I am planning on rebuilding anyway so might as well include a GPU while doing so.

    It's the same as the crashes Usasma already reviewed:

    VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE (116)
    Attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout failed.

    Well I "fixed" the problem. It's not really a fix just installed Win 7 32-bit. No more BSOD

    I'll reinstall 64-bit after I buy the new hardware and see if it works better with that. For now 32-bit is fine, runs super smooth anyways
