Windows 7: Computer Freezing At Windows 7 Welcome Screen And Desktop

Computer Freezing At Windows 7 Welcome Screen And Desktop

Completely out of nowhere it seems, my computer has picked up the habit of freezing at the Welcome screen when I boot my computer. The spinning loader goes around for about 3 seconds and then just freezes forcing me to force reboot. There have been seldom times where it reaches the desktop and then slowly loads up programs before either just freezing without explanation, or one time the display adapter stopped responding and turned my screen off temporarily just before recovering then freezing again. I had it working for a while yesterday just without the sound working.. unless I plugged in a headset. This was all fine and dandy until I decided to restart again today in hoping I'd fix the sound with a simple restart only to encounter the problem all over again..

I've tried doing multiple system restores thinking it might have been something within the last few days causing the problem.. as it came completely out of nowhere. That didn't seem to help anything though.. and I'm not sure what else to do. This is a fairly new desktop build (little under 2 months) and it has more than adequate cooling as well as clean vents and case free of dust.

Boot into Safe Mode

When you are in safe mode, do these two things....

Daemon Tools, Alcohol 120% and Power Archiver Pro uses SCSI Pass Through Direct (SPTD), which is a well known BSOD causer. Uninstall Daemon Tools at first. Then download SPTD standalone installer from, and execute the downloaded file as guided below :
  • Double click to open it.
  • Click this button only:
  • If it is grayed out, as in the picture, there is no more SPTD in your system, and you just close the window.
► Free up the startup. Windows does not need any other program to auto start with it, but the auto start programs often conflicts and causes various problems including BSODs.
  1. Click on the Start button
  2. Type “msconfig (without quotes), click the resulting link. It will open the System Configuration window.
  3. Select the “Startup” tab.
  4. Deselect all items other than the antivirus.
  5. Apply > OK
  6. Accept then restart.
Now, reboot into normal mode. Does it work? Let us know.
