I had a look at jumping the PSU and to be honest, I am not very comfortable doing that mate, especially since the PC is under warrenty and I have never built or worked on a PC in my life.

I am fairly good with software and have intermediate PC skills, I am however not experienced in installing or removing PC parts other than sliding an SSD in after buying a special case on Ebay for it!

Also the Dell tech has the link to this thread to see what I have tried and to get idea's of what the cause may be from your input and I really don't want to do anything that could make the problem worse or create new problems.

I really appreciate the help and suggestion mate, I will have to leave it to dell and one of their techs to test the power though if they think that is the problem.

I am more than happy to run tests and programs that store or create information to upload but the hands on stuff I will have to leave to the techs

Also, this WMI Application error shows up a lot too, usually after a crash when the PC is loading windows or possibly when the desktop it loading.

Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected.
That can be fixed by using this tool.

    Thanks mate :)

I ran the Fix-it and it said that it completed but no info on what it fixed or if it succeeded, is that normal? usually the Fix-it's say something or shows a green tick or something?

My PC has crashed more times with the phone unplugged over the last week since it's started, i have not had any issues recently with the phone being plugged in since I stopped Windows Auto updating quite a few months ago now, when I was having all the issues with BSODs related to USB 3.0 host controller and both 2.0 and 3.0 USB ports.

I do remember the last 4 or more crashes happened without my phone being plugged though.

I sometimes plug in an external hard drive (Western Digital 2 TB Passport) which I keep all my movies and backup files on and come to think of it, I used it recently was about a week ago when I downloaded a few movies.

Other than that I am trying to think what else would be storage other than my Samsung SSD 840 Pro 256, that is pretty much the only 3 things that I use with my PC regularly.

Hmm, ok then it was worth checking. But as you stated there is no error message on the shutdown event, which means it's not able to write it when it crashes.

I'll have a think and revisit this when I get in from work. But unless there is a circuit issue with the power, as in it's abruptly stopping for a few seconds, it looks to be a device issue.

Speaking of which, my machine only started playing this game after i changed the PSU....

Anyway i'll go have another think and get back with results.
well seeing as this started after the PSU was changed maybe it is worth looking at the PSU even though it is new..
Now I just know this will cause an outcry of not needed but I would be testing the via HW Info and a multimeter using these
    HWiNFO, HWiNFO32/64 - Download

PSU - Jump Start and this for volts references especially the Power_Good at pin 8 on the 24 pin (grey cable)
Voltage Rails - Power Supply 101: A Reference Of Specifications
if it comes up ok at least it is eliminated.
The HWiNFO64 show a ton of info, I have never seen this before, it's a great program!

What readings or info are you specifically after mate?

Is there a way to record it and run the game to make my PC crash and see if there was a power spike? or will it not save?

No worries but running the HW Info won't void anything I just thought you said you had changed the PSU so no probs.
Jumping the device is nothing for me but if you are not comfortable with it then again no probs.

It is just I had a similar problem with my admittedly older tester and a PSU swap out did the trick as power at pin 8 was way out as was the +12v rail.

By the by that HW Info is good for a lot of other info too without delving into the machine itself and I certainly would get Dell to check the power out for you.

I had a quick thought before I go to sleep, could it be related to removing windows media player at all?

I have VLC media player as my main video player but I followed instructions to turn WMP off/hide it in Windows 7 because it was dropping codex and I was having issues playing my music on it, so I switched to a program called "Music Bee" instead.

I am struggling for idea's so I thought maybe since WMP also plays videos, something is not happy with the nvidia.sys thing that may be causing a crash?

Anyway, the is pretty much all I have, I hope it doesn't sound too silly.

nvidia.sys Is exactly what you can guess from the name, an nVidia system driver, which i beleive was ruled out in the first pages..

Apart from that, I've never heard of Music Bee to be honest but i highly doubt it would be an issue with disabling WMP since our company rolls without it enabled at the start.

I beleive that ICIT2 and I are thinking along the same line, that it's actually hanging because of sudden/brief loss of power, which means the MoBo stops suddenly, causing all I/O traffic to stop also.

It explains the lack of logs, and also the screen freezing or bluescreening, since the latter is only available when windows has an intterupt error.

That is strange, the MoBo is fairly new, like 2-3 months old, it was replaced by a tech to fix the BSODs related to USB 3.0 host Controller that I spoke about previously, the BIOS A07 was old, so they replaced the whole MoBo i7 3970X with already updated BIOS A10, which completely stopped the USB 3.0 Host controller issues and the PC has been fine up until a week ago, when I started getting these black screen crashes.

Ahh, don't get me wrong, what i meant was a power shortage to the MoBo could cause this issue, and i explained (Very briefly) how this could happen.

The power shortage itself is very likely to come from the PSU, either incorrectly wired / poor parts or any other reason under the sun.

Sorry, I can't help more, it's just impossible without actually being able to test with the correct tools, and since the software tools aren't reporting properly, it does in all cases, point to HW malfunction.

I had a Dell technician replace my Nvidia GTX 690 graphics card and Motherboard (which had A11 BIOS installed, instead of A10 on previous Motherboard BIOS) and after more than a week of solid testing, I have not had a single crash or error.

I just wanted to post back and thank everyone for their replies and to let you know that it wasn't a PCU issue like some suggested, the tech tested it on site multiple times and it was fine, I just wanted to reply to help future people with similar issues.

    Marking the thread as solved.
