Unexpected BSOD error

This BSOD occurred when I changed the performance setting from 'Performance' to 'Power Save' in ASUS AI Suite 3. Can some one interpret the dump file (attached) please?

I don't recommend using programs like ASUS AI suite as they can cause a lot of problems.

Anyway, the bugchecks you are having point to hardware.

Run these hardware tests:


Stress test your CPU with Prime95

I recommend running Prime95 for around 2 hours

   Warning

As with most stress tests your component's temperature will rapidly increase.
It is advised that you download a temperature monitoring program like HWmonitor
Keep an eye on your temperatures and stop the tests if it starts to overheat

Stress test your graphics card with Furmark

I recommend running it for around 30 minutes

   Warning

Furmark will increase the temperature of your GPU rapidly so keep and eye on your temperatures

Memtest86 will test your RAM

   Information

Run Memtest86 for at least 8 passes so we get enough information to confirm that your RAM isn't failing

Run a Disk Check to scan for errors

   Note

Afterwards go into an Elevated Command Prompt (Run as administrator) and type in sfc /scannow
If it finds errors reboot and run the scan two more times

Run SeaTools to see if your HDD or SSD is failing

Post back the results.

Well it took a while but all tests ran OK. While getting into the swing of testing this machine I purchased a copy of AIDA64 Extreme and used that to give me a lot more info on what was happening. Unfortunately I don't have sufficient knowledge to make a great deal of sense on what it tells me however it did one interesting thing - when I ran the full report option it crashed at the Direct X input part and continues to do so. If I remove this part from the report it all runs perfect. Not sure if this is related to the BSOD issue or not.

Taking into account the clear runs of the CPU / GPU / Memory tests does anyone have any ideas of where I should look next?

It may well be driver related.

Enable driver verifier but only enable the options: Standard settings and IRP logging step 3.
Don't enable Force Pending I/O Requests

Enable Driver Verifier to monitor the drivers.
Driver Verifier -Enable and Disable
Run Driver Verifier for 24 hours or the occurrence of the next crash, whichever is earlier.

   Information

We use Driver Verifier as it puts a stress on the drivers, and so it makes the unstable drivers crash. This should flag the driver responsible in the dump file.

Driver Verifier will make the system laggy, this is normal so don't worry.

Before enabling DV, make sure that you have earlier System restore points made in your computer.

If there are no points, make a System Restore Point Manually

Post back the results.

Well it didn't like that. PC crashed immediately after enabling Verifier and restarting. Files attached.

That is the point of Driver Verifier, it's meant to crash the system to find bad drivers.

Remove all ASUS bloatware from your system.

Use Revo Uninstaller to software that can cling to your computer. Use Advanced Mode to remove leftover registry entries:

OK so excuse me if I ask a daft question or two here.

1) What's 'Bloatware'? (That raised a chuckle...)
2) ASUS make my motherboard so there is bound to be load of ASUS stuff on my machine - do I need to be a bit cautious about what I remove here?
3) The part highlighted in red references a program called RAMdisk which converts some of my RAM into a drive (sure you know all about this stuff) - I don't use it but have looked at it. Since that is the item highlighted is that the 'Bloatware' I need to remove?

Bloatware is unnecessary software that can also cause problems, it does more harm than good and is installed by most manufacturers, it's not necessary for the system to work otherwise it would be included with every copy of Windows.

I have an ASUS motherboard that has no bloatware installed.

Yes remove RAMdisk and other ASUS software.

Do I need to run verifier again after removing? Assuming yes is the answer - I'll do this tomorrow as its a wee bit late! Since you are just up the road from me you are probably thinking the same.
