Windows 7: Random BSOD and trouble upgrading to new Win 8

09 Jun 2014   #11

Windows 7 Pro 64bit

I need to use the CD that came with the motherboard to install the LAN driver at least, or I can't connect to the internet. Unless I try to find one somewhere else on a different computer an then try and load it up via USB or something.

I didn't have anything loaded when I posted the latest dump files - only the LAN driver, and I was trying to do auto updates for SP1.

I have now loaded Avast home security.

It doesn't seem to make any difference anyway as I just tried to start in safe mode with networking enabled - with no CD's inserted or anything else attached and I got BSOD. I tried safe mode only and uninstalled the LAN driver and installed one I got from the broadcom website specifically for my chipset. I uninstalled the driver for the CD drive through device manager and scanned the internet for a new one through device manager.

Updating to SP1 through autoupdater consistently fails.

I've set the dump files to collect kernal memory dumps (although it seemed to already be set to that), so as soon as I get a BSOD i'll post the link to it.

An hour later and here we are:

I am now going to try doing the SP1 manually

Didn't work - it suggested I try the update standalone packge, which then failed and suggested I go to the Microsoft website which suggested I re-install the Windows 7 as an upgrade. I went through all of that and got a BSOD with the header being something like "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL_TO", got that twice, then the installer got to the point where it needed to restart the computer. When it did - massive failure: STOP: c000021a {Fatal system error}
The verification of a knownDLL failed. System process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc000012f(0x00105dc0 0x00000000)
The system has been shut down

I restarted the computer and now I have the choice to boot from Windows Setup or Windows 7. Windows setup results in the same fatal system error, and windows 7 in safe node told me the process had failed and was reverting to the old version.

I think my computer is truly f**ked.

I have an update.

I sent the computer off to get repaired as I know you guys can't do hardware checks. Apparently there was nothing wrong with my original motherboard and I had no need to change it.

When I did change it from an Asus board to an AsRock board, that's where the trouble really started. The AsRock board had 1 or 2 faulty RAM slots which was the cause of all the trouble (as I'm filling all 8).

I took out the new board, re-installed the Asus. Followed your sage advice about Windows 7 SP1 and using a graphics driver from 2013. Everything seems to be back to silky smooth normal.

I really want to say thanks for all your help during this period. I won't say this is solved just yet as I may run into problems in the near future, but it really does look as if I'm now in the clear.
