    Windows 7 Explorer Multiple Crashes

I got a sudden rash of Windows Explorer crashes - anything from trying to open a folder or trying to run a program from the Start Menu. A shutdown/restart appeared to resolve the issue for now but from reading another forum, it appears I'm not alone with respect to the type of crash and the faulting module that's involved - SHELL32.dll. Full scan for virus, spyware, malware showed no issues. Any advice?

Here's the info from the event log:

Faulting application name: explorer.exe, version: 6.1.7600.16404, time stamp: 0x4a765771
Faulting module name: SHELL32.dll, version: 6.1.7600.16385, time stamp: 0x4a5be054
    Exception code: 0xc0000005
    Fault offset: 0x000000000010e14a
    Faulting process id: 0xbf4
    Faulting application start time: 0x01ca58c33b4367b4
    Faulting application path: C:\Windows\explorer.exe
    Faulting module path: C:\Windows\system32\SHELL32.dll
