    External Hard Drive Blue Screen

I have two different usb external hard drives, a seagate free agent 500gb and a 350gb Western Digital. I can access these drives when attached to a front end usb port, however, everytime I attempt a backup using either nenw software compatible with windows 7 or the windows 4 backup utility itself, I get the blue screen of death. I have been on the phone with Microsoft for over 4 hours today, and they have not yet been able to reslove this issue. Can anyone make suggestions on how to over come this problem. Thanks.
