    The system seems fine, except for the inability to install updates and the fact that some services (VisualSVN server, Hamachi, maybe others) do not seem to stay installed. I have to reinstall the relevant application each time the application is closed.

    It is worth noting that I still don't have enough uptime to be sure the problem hasn't just not surfaced yet under Clean Boot.

    My SATA was, and still is in AHCI Mode. I am Using the Windows Disk Management utility to create a Dynamic Disk, and chose Striping. I am NOT using BIOS RAID because, at the time, Windows RAID was recommended over BIOS RAID. IRST is and has always been installed.

    At this point, I am seriously considering a clean install. It has been 1.5 years at least,

    A clean install every so often, is usually helpful, even if you're not having problems. I probably end up doing one every 6 months or so. A clean install may resolve all your problems as long as one isn't a hardware problem. There are other options that we could try, but none as effective as a clean install. If you plan on it and have everything ready for it, you can make it pretty painless. I did one last weekend and was up and functional in a few hours.

    So I finally got around to clean installing and the system and it is now stable.

    In other words: Nuking from orbit is sometimes the best way to get rid of a few elusive bugs.

    As time consuming as a clean install is, It is many times a lot quicker and easier than determining which driver or which program is it that's causing problems, or determining if it is a software or hardware problem. I know if I start having problems with my computer, if I don't figure it out pretty quick, a clean install is on the way.

    Great job. I'm glad you have your computer running the way you like it. Very well done.

    hello all.

    i have the same setup- m6700, only one HGST, the same random "freeze" error.
    Bought the HGST last month, swap with the original and now defective 750 "Black Drive", and the rest is history... A week ago I've disabled the drive from the bios and the crashes stopped. My sq is quite full and i postponed the trip to the service for the presumed hdd malfunction (although all the tests in the world say that my HDD is fine).

    Today i've found this topic and i'm convinced that the HDD is fine, and I gather that i have to reinstall the whole OS and SW... (bad timing)

    But why?

    I see that the only difference between the HGST and the WD Black (apart from size, brand...) would be the FREE FALL SENSOR on the WD. Feature that is highly verbose d by Dell advertising and some Blootware (Free Fall Sensor) in Control Panel.

    Could this app be the problem?

It doesn't always blue screen, some times during a video it freezes and the audio skips, or the screen will look as if my LCD was broken or pixelated while also frozen, or it will just go back and restart. When it does freeze i notice that my H-DISC light is lit up, not blinking but constant on....
My fairly new laptop (<3 months old) will occasionally shut down while the lid is closed. When I open my laptop when this happens it's already at the boot menu for "windows did not shut down properly." It has so far only happened while the lid is closed and I haven't actually seen a BSOD.
