INTEL called today after I logged an RMA support request through their website last week. Today, in theory, the three-year warranty expires. I will, after receiving a procedural e-mail, have to send the processor in and, after some testing, receive a replacement, should the tests confirm the processor to be faulty (which I believe must be the case). Let's see what happens. I also RMA'ed the "old" mainboard to ASUS and, should it be tested faulty, will receive a replacement in March.

In any case, I consider the matter solved ; )

A new Intel i7-3930K arrived from Intel Netherlands today. Once the ASUS mainboard is back (RMA or proven undamaged), I can build another compute box from all the new spares or sell the processor.

Sounds great. You've been through a lot of trouble and money. It's still hard to believe your problems were the CPU. They rarely go bad. Good luck with it and I wished we lived closer. But even though it is 2 Generations old, you may be able to get some good money for it. They can still hold their own when it comes to the heavy work. If you can use it for work, it may be worth it to you to build the rig and use it.

In fact, the official retail price is only €20 less than it was in December 2011, believe it or not.
