I'm running Win 7 x64. AMD X2 6000+ (dual core) 2 meg ram. I plan on adding more ram later. No crashes.

I have XP installed on another hard drive.

thanks, do you have Private Browsing enabled all the time and are you running build 3.55 of Firefox?? Most people can recreate it. I feel there is no way you cannot get this issue if you enable Private Browsing to be on in every session and then surf around the close the browser and right click. If may not come up on the first time you do this but if you kept it on for most of the day or part of your night time surfing I would imagine it will show up. There is an extension to turn it on all the time or add it to your shortcut to enable it on start up. In the end Mozilla is researching it and speaking with MS. Hopefully together they will find out what is going on.

I have a work around for this problem

Confirmed to work on Firefox 3.5, 3.6b and Minefield in Windows 7 64bit.
The problem come from Firefox in private mode clearing the Clipboard incorrectly upon exit. Using the settings below achieves the same effect as "Private Browsing" without Explorer.exe crashing

1) Launch Firefox
2) Go to Tools > Options > Privacy
3) Select "Use Custom Settings for History"
4) Uncheck everything
5) Check "Clear History when Firefox closes"

I have not yet encountered a explorer crash yet with these settings

How to reproduce the problem:
1) Launch Firefox
2) Go to Tools > Options > Privacy
3) Select Never Remember History
4) Go to any website and copy some text
5) Close Firefox completely
6) Vigorously right click on folder in start menu and desktop icons

Hope this helps

I am not using Private browsing in Firefox 3.5.5. Sorry if you thought I did.

without using FF private browsing that still working but sometime it need to update fix patch in any AV or software you use like I got updated in Kaspersky IS 2010 with "a" on it which is update fix patch plus TuneUp 2010 updated that may have fixed the problems to stop the crashing in Explorer.exe So check with all your software that has been installed then go into website for any update latest version or any critical fix patch that may fix the problems.

Here is a quote from Ehsan with Firefox who is working on this issue:

"
Our Microsoft contacts have confirmed this to be a bug on the Windows clipboard
handling code, and have suggested a couple of workarounds for us, until they
get the problem fixed on their side.

1. Leaving an application/x-moz-privatebrowsing item on the clipboard, which
would still clear the clipboard effectively because no other application knows
about that type, and therefore the clipboard will be empty as far as any
application is concerned.

2. Using the EmptyClipboard Win32 API on Windows.

The first workaround actually imposes a privacy risk for us (because it allows
applications to tell whether some data had been copied inside the private
browsing mode after leaving that mode), so I'm going to try the second
workaround.

Now that we have a clear set of steps to reproduce, and a patch, I think we
should block on this for all branches that ship the private browsing code,"
which would be trunk, 1.9.2 and 1.9.1."

My solution

I downloaded shellview from http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html.
Went through all the highlighted suggestions and found it was deskscapes.dll.
I had previously deleted the program but the .dll was causing the issue.
So if you have or had deskscape, it could be your problem.
There are plenty of third party programs that can cause it to crash, I have had no problems with firefox.
I do suggest download shellview and one by one disable each context menu produced by programs (not microsoft) and right clicking a few times on the start menu, if it still happens enable it and disable the next one, it only took me 20 mins to solve my issue.
You will have to run shellview as administrator to be able to actually disable or enable them.
Hope this helps

Yeah, they seem to be making good progress, that was my bug report, I posted a while back.
I think I added the link to the two big threads on here, them being this one and mine.

I'm really (worryingly so) looking forward to this supposed fix and/or workaround, be it from Mozilla or Microsoft, or both!

Don't be upset with my dear friends, but I've decided to go back to Vista Ultimate x64 rightly or wrongly (subject to change without prior notice).

I find Vista more responsive and surprisingly my software apps seem to operate with greater compatibility than 7?

Today I spoke with the Microsoft Tech Support guy I'm building up a really good relationship with and recommended he visit this site and Vistax64.com and in particular this thread which he has done.

He is understandably very impressed with both sites.

In the meantime, I have attached another DllHost.exe error which I think is identical to the one I received when I had Windows 7 Ultimate x64 installed last week, and BTW, it occurred BEFORE I installed Firefox 3.5.5.

Cheers, Neil
