I've noticed when I get the error if I right click somewhere in Firefox and then on the Desktop, it goes away.

As far as Avast, I have gotten the error with Avast disabled but then again, I disabled it after the error started so not sure if that matters. I have had the error when Firefox was idle and I just walked in the room and there was the message. For whatever reason right clicking in Firefox seems to have some impact. Sometimes I had to do it a couple times. If not, I'll often keep getting the error over and over.

This sounds like a memory problem. Have you tried swapping out memory or removing one ram?
I had 4 - 1 gig sticks installed and when I ran SFC /scannow; it would randomly stop. I removed one pair of sticks and the problem went away.
Then again it also sounds like a driver issue. Which driver I have no idea.

I don't currently have this problem stated in this thread.

this problem is widespread in windows 7..so i'm doubting it has anything to do with memory. As someone mentioned earlier in this thread Microsoft will probably send out an update to fix it and we will never know what the problem was...hopefully they do it soon

My right click problem went away after I uninstalled "eraser"...

The support forum at the above link has the same right click issues...
As usual, this program may not be the cause of the problem on other peoples computers. However, it did solve the right click problem with explorer crashing for me.

I know the link above relates to XP, but Windows 7 seems to have the same problem with it.

Just had the issue again - (this time started with the Com Surrogate error when closing a jpg) and tried right clicking in Firefox but nothing after many tries. I then closed the Hermes RSS Gadget and it went right away. Turning avast off once again had no effect either. Went right away when closing that gadget.

    Whack

I was having the same problems with right clicking etc. I ran the sfc scan, windows found errors and fixed them. I also turned off private browsing in FF and just set to delete private info on exit. So far I have had no Explorer crashes, but I lost my 8 ball start menu orb. I dont think win7 likes to be customized, and the gadgets/sidebar are f'n whacked. Watch your task manager process tab, turn on viewing page faults in columns. I was getting an insane amount of page faults with sidebar, 29 million in 13 hours, I started deleting gadgets one at a time, and every last one of em were causing major page faults, so I disabled sidebar altogether. It has been 2 full days now with NO explorer crashes/right click problems. But, Im still getting slow respone to read drives etc sometimes. I think I'm going back to my dual boot ubuntu/xp drive and wait for sp1.

Windows 7 wont get SP1 until Q4 2010 as beta version is coming after xmas so it still working to build up think it between October to December 2010 for the SP1 to be release. I remember some mentioned by MS that some AV may not work with Windows 7 like BitDefender so seem that AV has update new version that would work fine like I used Kaspersky I.S. 2010 with "a" on it to update the fix patch - something like add critical fix patch that sort it out some AV and yes stay off the FF private browsing mode as it dont support either Vista SP2 or Windows 7 - only work on XP.

Hey HD -- as far as your drive response times - did you go into your power options? If not, what will happen is your drives will power down after a certain period of time. So then when you try to open something there will be a delay. I changed the power setting for high performance and in addition, furhter increased the time for the hard drive to shut off. Just a thought in case that is the issue...

I have two hard drives and one of them does power down after a while like you said. There's a slight delay in Shut down time when Windows 7 powers up the drive it powered down.

What this has to do with right clicking, I don't know, just thought I'd mention right clicking sometimes makes "Windows explorer not respond" to stay on topic.
