0x116 atikmpag.sys : abit ip35 pro doesn't like R7 260X graphics card

I'm troubleshooting a potential motherboard/GPU compatibility issue.

Abit IP35 Pro - Latest BIOS 18
New graphics card - Sapphire R7 260X 2GB
Windows 7 X64 SP1

The system was running fine. I bought a new graphics card, uninstalled all graphics drivers and deleted them, powered off, installed new card then powered on and I get BSOD stop 0x00000116 atikmpag.sys

I even tried a fresh Windows 7 x64 sp1 install from USB stick. POST displays ok but then as soon as windows install changes the graphics mode it goes to black screen and stays there.

The new graphics card works in another machine. I've swapped out power supply and ram with the same results. No overclocking. System is stable with existing PCI-E graphics.

As I'm on the latest BIOS (which I've cleared/reset after flashing) and I cant even get any display output during windows install I'm guessing it's just not going to work.

..but I'm interested to know what the attached dump tells us, just in case there's any hope of getting this setup to work.

hello, obvious and welcome to the Forums. As far as your question, both dump files list the graphics drivers and a failure to recover.

When you say you uninstalled the previous drivers, are you sure you got all of them? You must have had some display when booting into Windows in order to install the graphics driver, or perhaps I'm a little slow. Also, am I correct that you have a 380W Power supply? From what I am finding it is recommended to have a 500W minimum and preferably a 600W PSU. Although from what I find on the power draw of your card, I think the 600W is a little high. But, according to the dump files, what is happening is the drivers are crashing and not recovering within the allotted time for windows.

I might suggest you try reinstalling the graphics drivers, if you can get a display as follows.

I am going to give you some links that will help you get a good clean install and not have any drivers you don't need that will conflict with other drivers. Download a WHQL driver from https://www.sevenforums.com/graphic-c...ndows-7-a.html . Once you have them downloaded, uninstall you current driver from control panel. next clean up any left over drivers from following this tutorial Drivers - Clean Left over Files after Uninstalling and select only ATI Display Drivers. After you have done that and rebooted, install the new driver, only select custom install and install only what you have to. Very few people need most of what they include. You do not need the audio/HDMI drivers as you already have that in your Motherboard drivers. Unless there is some reason you need them, the only thing you really need is the Display Driver.

To clarify, my first attempt at upgrading the graphics card involved uninstalling AMD display drivers/catalyst manager etc and doing another uninstall from device manager until I got back to standard vga adapter. After that I powered down and installed the new graphics card. System simply black screens (while seeming to load/run in background) after getting past POST. Stays like that indefinitely.

If I then put the original graphics card back in + re-install appropriate drivers the system is back to how it was and working ok. If I then power down and insert the new graphics card I get the BSOD as per first post, so yes, drivers are installed at that point.

The power supply is a new coolermaster 500W and I also tried a 700W supply.

The thing that bothers me the most is that when I attempt a fresh windows install from USB stick with the new graphics card installed it goes to black screen (monitor signal light remains on) and stays there while the Windows installation loads files. The screen then stays black indefinitely. If I force a reset after eg an hour then I sometimes get the BSOD as per the first post.

Thanks for signposting me to DDU. With old graphics card + drivers installed I uninstall drivers then run DDU from safe mode choosing the "shut down when done" option. I install the new graphics card and power up (I'm using additional 4pin power to the card and the fan spins up). System posts fine. Goes to verifying DMI data pool then just as the resolution changes to display "starting windows" the screen goes dark and stays that way. Windows continues to load and idles. Screen remains dark but the power/signal indicator is green. Eventually power saving cuts in and monitor turns off. Pressing any key wakes monitor but screen remains dark.

You said earlier that you had tried it in another computer and it ran fine. Were you using the same type cable and connection to the monitor as you are now? I'm sort of out of ideas, so I may be asking some elementary questions. But, is your monitor set for the type of signal you are sending it (HDMI, DVI) Have you tried another pcie slot on the board? There is very little involved in a Graphics card. The driver, the card, the PSU and the board. The drivers don't load until the operating system begins to load. Not until you see the starting Windows do any drivers load, If I am understanding you correctly, when you see starting Windows, is when your monitor goes black. Are you sure you have the correct drivers loaded for the card? I would make sure of that, try another slot and another cable with a different connection. I honestly don't know of anything else to try. But, it would help if you would update your system specs. We may see something there that throws up a red flag. As far as system specs, these are the instructions I usually give. Model and Manufacturer help as sometimes we need to look up a particular component, just like I tried looking up the PSU you have listed, which is obviously the wrong one. I tested the new card using he same DVI cable and monitor in another PC. I ran a partial windows install on it right up to the language/region selection screen and decided that was enough to show it was working.

The monitor displays a little dvi icon briefly when it detects a dvi signal. No other sources were connected.

I used ATI/AMD catalyst 14-9 which seem appropriate, either just the drivers or the complete install. The other older card (HD 5450) also runs on these drivers.

The Abit IP35 Pro motherboard has two x16 PCI-E slots. I've tried in both. Same results.

It's a bit of a head scratcher. Both systems are self build. I forgot sevenforums has systemspecs in the user profile. Neither of the systems I've mentioned are mine. One is my GF's son's (He wants more FPS, naturally) and the other is a neigbours.

I'll put my own system specs in anyway but for the record the problem system is An Abit IP35 Pro, Intel E6600, 700W psu, 3*1GB ddr2, cdrom and 500GB sata hard drive. Pretty simple setup.

I've even toyed with swapping the motherboards if I could get the go ahead. I've dropped a new motherboard into an existing windows install before and it's a bit of a lottery as to whether it works. The approach I've taken before is to (this will make you wince) delete pretty much everything in device manager then shut down, install new motherboard and restart!?! Windows activation issues aside, this has worked before lol.

Well, I know people on this Forum who are running a 780 on a C2D board just fine. It won't get the performance it will on newer boards, but better performance than most anything else you can put in it. The last paragraph basically says it needs an update sometimes, but it does work.

Personally, I remain unconvinced. Your problem may be the Motherboard, but I don't think that's the problem with it. Just my 2 cents.
