BSOD Stop 0x124, No new hardware, no HD or RAM test issues

    Hey all,

So while the logs show this seems to have happened a few times in the past I don't recall (maybe while a roommate was on my comp) over the past week my computer has been very unreliable. I notice it most often when doing things graphic intensive (swtor, dota2, watching videos) and it hasn't happened while idle on desktop. Reinstalled video drivers, did a memtest and a HDD test, no errors found. At one point did a system restore to a recent point prior to the issue, still with no luck. I already have a new computer on order but if I can salvage this one I'd like to.

I do live right next to new arena construction and so dust is an ongoing concern. I have went to town on my rig with compressed air so I don't think it's a current issue but I can't discount it as being a potential initial cause of the issue.

Error number I managed to grab was:

    0x00000124 (0x0000000000000000, 0xFFFFFA800770C028, 0x00000000B6602000, 0x0000000034000135)

This was on my most recent crash. No idea if it matches the others.

About a third of the time the system doesn't blue screen, it just flickers and begins reloading windows. I don't think those time are represented in the dump filed as it'd be quite a bit longer.

    Any help is much appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Hi Lareonis.

You said you did memtest. With what and for how long? If not done as I am saying, do it ....
Test your RAM modules for possible errors. Run memtest86+ for at least 8 consecutive passes.

If it start showing errors/red lines, stop testing. A single error is enough to determine that something is going bad there.

Stress test the Graphics Card using Furmark. Take a screenshot of the furmark window before closing it. Upload the screenshot for us.

Stress test the CPU. It saves the result as a .txt file in the prime95's folder. Upload the file for us.

Check if the Power Supply Unit (PSU) supplying adequate power to the computer or not.
eXtreme Power Supply Calculator - The most trusted PSU Wattage Calculator
Also let us know the wattage of the employed PSU. It will be a vital info here, as it is a branded PC of an age of more or less 5 years.

Report us the heat of the computer after a couple of hours of your normal usage. Upload a screenshot of the summery tab of Speccy. Alternatively, you can publish a Speccy snapshot too: Speccy - Publish Snapshot of your System Specs .

    Let us know the results.

Using the power supply calculator you linked me to it says minimum usage 362W and recommended 412. I can't remember the specific model I purchased but I am not using the original PSU. I am using a 450 or 500 watt PSU I purchased when I bought the new video card. (Also not stock). Annoyingly I cannot see any details on the PSU to be more precise without ripping the entire thing out... and the way this tower is I need to essentially remove EVERYTHING to get it out. I am certain that I went overkill on my PSU when I did the upgrade of video card.

This was over 2 years ago, and I haven't had issues until recently, so I don't think it's due to any normal power issues (ie assuming everything is working properly).

I have the Prime95 test active atm and hopefully it can shed some light. RAM test to come later.

Crashed one hour into the stress test, no saved file as result. Not sure if it's due to the test or due to a different underlying reason. Will begin another test and see how far it goes.

    Arc,

Was wondering how long I should do this stress test? The site recommends 4-20 hours, or days, even weeks. While it is possible I can get a good block of several hours in, if the system crashes as I sleep then I fear I'll again not have the text log.

Now, of course if it keeps crashing it could mean it is the CPU... but it could also just mean whatever it actually is just craps out as well. /shrug.

It's 7pm currently and been going for just over an hour. Assuming my system doesn't crash by the time I do I could get a 3-4 hour test in. Would that be good enough?

Either the CPU is failing itself or there is dust accumulation in the computer and it is running hot.

Do the Speccy screenshot as suggested earlier. It will lead us to the decision.

Read the supplied link, it says ....
    6. Leave the test running for up to 2 hours, unless errors occur sooner. Errors will show up by one or more of the workers stopping.
I would say that 3 hours would be enough.

I came home today after running an 8 hour prime95 test. No crash. However, there is no .txt in the folder with results. Just license, readme, stress, undoc, whatsnew. No results.txt came up.

    Here's the speccy screen though.

I should note that this screen was taken ~3 minutes after stopping the 8 hour long stress test (note the high temps)

The stress test failed once, but did not fail at the next time.

Can you do the speccy another time, after a couple of hours of normal usage?

Interesting. Just did it this morning and the temps are nearly identical.

Also, something I noticed last night as I was playing some dota2 and watching tv through my media player... I didn't have a single crash, but I turned off my second monitor. Might be worth mentioning, or could be a fluke.

Here's the screen from this am:
