    Windows 7 Ultimate x64 BSOD Code: 124

I randomly get BSOD 124, usually happens when running charting software. Today’s BSOD happened after about nine hours. Majority of that time I had some charting software (NinjaTrader) running and was surfing the web. While surfing the web I clicked on a video and bam got a shutdown. I did get a BSOD of a “F4” earlier in the week, which I believe is a Hard Drive error. There is no record of it I assume since the hard drive was not active. The system was not idle or coming back from a sleep when it crashed. It happened when I turned on the computer and started loading programs. I currently have a Crucial SSD MX100 256GB running at the latest firmware. I ordered a Samsung SSD 840 Pro 256GB for swapping out the MX100.

Intel Diagnostic Tool Burn-In Test: Passed (WITH WARNING expected freq: 4.0 detected freq. 4.4)
Memtest86+: No errors after running test for 5 hours (4-6 passes)
Prime95: Unable to run. Read somewhere doesn’t work well with i7-4790K. Just shuts computer down no BSOD.

The above points to some significant issues, possibly CPU.

Uninstall all Gigabyte applications/utilities. Reset all overclocks to default values, then run the Standard Test in IBT, and post back the results.

    GIGABYTE GA-Z97X-UD5H-BK / i7-4790K Issues

    Thanks Golden for your response.

First, in the Bios I selected "Load Optimized Defaults". Second, I removed all Gigabyte Software. Finally, I ran the IntelBurnTest and successfully passed. One thing that did concern me was the high core temps (90+ C) during testing. It would spike up right away. Tcase for i7-4790K is 72.72C. I see others have also had trouble with high temps and seems to be widespread. The "optimized defaults" bios settings are incorrect. I'm gonna focus on controlling the high temperatures. Using Intel XTU too modify settings as recommended by ken-intel. Gonna require some tweaking. Will report back my findings.

    Thanks.

I'm surprised that its so high using the H100i. How long has the CPU been in the system? What thermal paste was used?

Everything was assembled together back in August 2014.

H100i comes pre-applied with thermal paste so didn't put any. I attached a link for others in case they are experiencing same problem. Never had to tweak settings before since I never overclock or ever wanted to. Hopefully Gigabyte releases a firmware update. Some users also have reported RMAing the chip and that a replacement chip has worked better. I wonder if there is a way to get Batch Number and other info from the chip without having to remove the pump off of the chip.

    Intel Turbo Boost Technology Disabled

I tried messing around with the Turbo Boost Settings in XTU and could not lower my temperatures. I decided to disable the Intel Turbo Boost. My temperatures are doing better when using IntelBurnTest Standard Test. I will continue to monitor the stability of the system (BSODs).

    Just wanted to update:

My system has been running without a single BSOD since I made modifications by upgrading Firmware and Disabling Intel Turbo Boost.

I would recommend the following if anybody also experiencing Stop: 124 with the same processor and motherboard that I have.

Firmware F6: High Temperatures with Turbo Boost Enabled or Disabled
Firmware F7e: High Temperatures with Turbo Boost Enabled. No High Temperatures with Turbo Boost Disabled.
Firmware F7f: High Temperatures with Turbo Boost Enabled or Disabled.

The extreme temperatures would experience when Stress Testing in IntelBurnTest "standard"

To continue testing going to leave computer running for a couple of days. At the time of this post, computer has been "On" for 18 hours and using Firmware F7e. Also, I have not swapped out the Crucial MX100 as Golden determined the bug possibly happening cause of CPU.

You sure you have that h100i mounted correctly? I'm running the same cooler, and I just ran the burn-in test, and my highest temps were 53C
