Windows 7: Laptop stuck in cycle of startup and BSOD

Laptop stuck in cycle of startup and BSOD

Before this problem occured, my laptop was shut down properly and left overnight, not plugged in, as is every night.

When I tried to turn on my laptop (Lenovo 5670, 64BIT, Windows 7) in the morning the screen was on (slightly lit) but no more happened. The mouse cursor was there and I think I could move it (not quite sure anymore).

After leaving this for 10 or so minutes, I pressed the power button on the laptop. As you know, if the computer is running, to get it to shut down you have to press and hold the power button. This time, I only pressed it and it immediately shut down.

I gave it some time before pressing the power button again to switch it on.

On the windows error recovery page, I selected the option 'Launch Start Up Repair (Recommended)'.

It took about 15 minutes to complete this task and I selected 'Finish' upon completion; I did not read what the note said before clicking 'Finish'. Careless mistake yes.

The laptop then continued to switch itself on and, at that point, if not interrupted by pressing the power button, will continue this cycle:
Screen 1. NORMAL: Initial start up screen with black background and Lenovo logo, Insyde H2 Bios logo, Intel logo, option: Press [F2] for setup, option: Press [F12] for boot device selection menu. I tried both F2 and F12 but couldn't see an option which would help. I tried the three different start up options on the F12 option but the same cycle occured.
Screen 2. NORMAL: Continues to Windows start up screen with black background and windows animation with "Starting windows" written underneath. Small case copyright Microsoft Corporation at bottom.
Screen 3. BSOD: see photograph below.
  • fbfmon.sys
  • STOP: 0x00000050 (0xFFFFFA8137446BDA, 0x0000000000000000, 0xFFFFF88001AB2301, 0x0000000000000005)
  • fbfmon.sys - Address 0xFFFFF88001AB2301 base at FFFFF88001AAD000, DateStamp 4cecddf1
Attachment 347429

  • I cannot find a safe mode or start up repair option as you would usually get because the start up process never gets past Screen 2.
  • F8 at any stage of start up has no effect.
  • No external hard drives are connected to the computer.
  • Nothing happened out of the ordinary during last session usage.
  • I have not updated windows or downloaded any software or hardware recently.
  • Windows did an update a few weeks ago.
  • Antivirus (Avast, free version) has not warned of any threats
  • Laptop has been very slow in start up past few months. Most likely unrelated. Internal hard drive does not have much free space (a few GBs)
  • Laptop is three/four years old

From your BSOD, the fbfmon.sys is the Lenovo boot optimiser driver. Looks like soemthing has been damaged in the boot sequence, possibly a hard disk failure also.

Try a Startup Repair from the Windows 7 installation DVD:

Startup Repair Unsuccessful

Thanks for the prompt reply, Golden.

I managed to get a startup repair thanks to your link (related links showed I could get to it with F5 then F8 as I don't have the windows 7 installation dvd).

However, it tells me the repair was unsuccessful as it cannot be repaired automatically.

Have you any other suggestions?

Please run StartUp Repair 3 times, one immediately after another - sometimes the 3rd one is able to repair the issue.

Sorry for such a late reply, I had limited access to computers (obviously haha) and it was a very busy period. Ended up just taking the machine to a computer repair shop as neither the suggestions from here nor from IT help department at my university worked for permanent repair. Start up repair plus a few tweaks (deleting files that were causing computer to pause for ages on when starting up) done by IT staff... all this was temporary fix for my PC. It was still incredibly slow and sometimes would just not get out of start up screen like initial problem. I was never sure what would happen when i pressed on haha!

Shop said that hard drive was dead. Took absolutely ages to back up all files (since last back up few months ago) and computer often crashed so it took weeks of finding time to download 5gb at a time (took hours to do just that!).

Ended up getting the internal hard drive replaced with a new one and windows reinstalled. Cost around 90 total; approx half-half hard drive and service charge. Product key is needed to reinstall windows or you need to buy windows again - ouch.

Thanks for the help and I hope this helps anybody who has a similar problem. Don't give up on your PC!

Windows 7 stuck in endless boot cycle, startup repair freezes
So, I'm not exactly sure what I did. I was clearing up some space on my computer after using the Norton Removal Tool to get rid of this Norton trial popup that came up everytime I booted my computer. Now, after it told me to restart, it seems to be stuck in an endless boot cycle that resets itself...
