Your thread caught my eye because I have a similar problem that has frankly been going-on for years and I've never fixed it.
But to your concern, you said you've always had random crashes on sleep/hibernate (i.e. from Day One) so I dunno that a clean reinstall is going to help? Have you done a sfc /scannow and come-up clean? I recently did a Repair Install, which was painful ENOUGH without doing a clean install, and it helped insofar as my sfc /scannow was fixed (I showed errors) but did nothing to help my crash-on-standby woes.
Doing a Repair Install keeps all your programs and files and many settings, but is still a PIA because it reverts Windows to the level of the DVD (or .iso file) you use and thus needs hundreds of Windows Updates after. So it still takes hours to do, though of course that is way less painful than starting-over from scratch to install all your programs after Windows.
