Repeated BSOD's mostly in hal.dll, nearly always while unattended

Win7 Pro on a Dell Latitude D830 with 3GB RAM. System is stock except that over the years I've replaced the original WiFi module with a faster OEM one, added an OEM Bluetooth module, and of course migrated to larger/faster drives. I was an XP die-hard, so my 7 experience actually isn't very lengthy. BIOS is latest, and Windows Updates are current.

This problem started happening shortly after I installed 7 (on a new WD drive), but was very infrequent - maybe once every month or two. Lately it seems to be getting more frequent. It almost always happens in the 6-6:30am time range. 80% of the time the crash occurs in hal.dll; the rest are in other system objects or drivers such as dxgkrnl.sys, ntoskrnl.exe, or nwifi.sys. The only thing running at that time of day (at least that is user-invoked) is Firefox, Outlook, and a predefined backup profile in SyncBackPro. If I run that same profile manually it never has a problem, so I'm not sure that's a clue, and the problem has happened a few times at other times during the night, before SyncBackPro even starts. I've tried running various memory diagnostics, drive checkers, etc., all with no problems found.

I'm attempting to upload my diagnostic zip file. Here's a representative screen shot from BlueScreenViewer:

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Hello, KSMike. I'll see if I can help you. 4 of the last 5 dump files blamed this

    Code:
    BugCheck A, {0, 2, 0, fffff80002c1a477}
*** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for netw5v64.sys
*** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for netw5v64.sys
    Probably caused by : netw5v64.sys ( netw5v64+5b7d )
    Followup: MachineOwner
This is the driver in use now

    Code:
    netw5v64
    start end module name
    fffff880`03e9c000 fffff880`043d7000 netw5v64 T (no symbols)
        Loaded symbol image file: netw5v64.sys
        Image path: \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\netw5v64.sys

That is your Intel Wireless WiFi Link Driver and I think you can see, the driver needs to be updated. If it is part of the computer, you should be able to find an updated driver with the computer manufacturer's web site for your board.

    The other dump

    Code:
    BugCheck 116, {fffffa8009dc82e0, fffff880051d5b2c, ffffffffc000009a, 4}
Unable to load image \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\nvlddmkm.sys, Win32 error 0n2

*** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for nvlddmkm.sys
    Probably caused by : nvlddmkm.sys ( nvlddmkm+8f0b2c )
    Followup: MachineOwner
    That driver is

    Code:
    nvlddmkm
    start end module name
    fffff880`048e5000 fffff880`053dc000 nvlddmkm T (no symbols)

    Please update that too.

It would help a lot if you fill out your system specs as detailed as possible.
Please fill out your System Specs

       Information
Your System Specs will help us to help you, and doing it in this manner will make them available to all helpers in every post and keep us from hunting for them. We ask that you fill them out in as much detail as possible including Desktop or Laptop, Model number if it is an OEM computer and all components with the Manufacturer and Model number if possible.

If you will go to your last post and click the 'System Specs' in the bottom left of the post, you will find a link to update your system specs. Please fill those out in as much detail as possible, making sure to click save at the bottom of the page. If you would like to know what we would like, you can click 'My System Specs' at the bottom left of this post to see mine. If you do not know what your components are, this will help you accomplish this task. System Info - See Your System Specs

Essenbe, thank you so much. I'll have a look at those drivers, and I've updated my system specs. I'm curious though, why would a bad wifi driver only manifest itself at 6:00am?

I can't answer that. I also have no idea whay any driver would crash at the same time every day. Do you have any scheduled tasks set to start at that time?

The only thing I have set to run then is a system backup, but I can run that same backup any other time without any issues. Of course there are default scheduled tasks set up by Windows that I've never played with - so maybe something related there.

The only driver I can find for the WiFi card is directly from Intel. When I install that and reboot, there's no change to the size, date/time stamp for netw5v64.sys - so I'm not sure I've accomplished anything there.

Can you find one from Dell? If it is not an add on, it should be provided by Dell. But, they are not real great about keeping drivers up to date.

On nvlddmkm.sys, that's a bit more clear - I discovered that NVIDIA released a new driver for my card just last month, and Windows Update didn't catch it because I had the wrong package installed in the first place. So I'm hopeful that's an improvement.

For the WiFi driver, Dell does have a driver package that it says is compatible with my system (by service tag #), but when I try to install it, I get "This installation is not supported on this operating system version..." When I downloaded (today) the one I found directly from Intel and ran the installer, it did crank away for nearly a minute, and threw no error messages. So I wonder if it's possible that even though netw5v64.sys hasn't changed, perhaps it will no longer be used? Wishful thinking perhaps...

EDIT: Although, when I rename netw5v64.sys to netw5v64.sys.OLD then re-run the Intel driver installer, netw5v64.sys does not reappear in the drivers directory, but there is a file there now that wasn't before: NETwLv64.sys. So maybe not just wishful thinking. Glad I took a screen shot of the drivers directory before changing anything.

Just want to thank you again Essenbe. Mind if I keep this thread alive for a few days? I promise to update & close it if things seem well.

All tat sounds great, Mike. I hope it works out well for you. NETwLv64.sys is for a Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN for your info. I m not sure which one you have. By all means keep this thread open until you find out if it is solved or not. Good luck and let me know.

Yes, the 4965AGN is what I'm using, which was a change I made from the original ABG card some time ago - long enough that I don't know whether I just assumed the right driver installed automatically, or what; since WiFi functionality has seemed fine, I never questioned it.

No problems so far with the updated laptop, though one day is not a valid test at all. But so far, so good. I'll definitely come back and update before closing the thread. Thank you so much sir!
