BSOD and other problems after Windows Update

hi guys,
A week or two ago, I received a prompt that Windows 7 had automatically downloaded some updates and when I shut my laptop down, it installed said updates.
A few days after installing these updates, I randomly received the blue screen of death.
Now my laptop is kind of old, and does randomly get some graphical errors and such every so often, so I just assumed it was on it's way out. However, after a reboot and after doing some work, it got the bluescreen again!
At that point I just shut it down, and didn't touch my laptop for about a week.

However, due to university work, and needing a computer for microsoft word, I decided to boot my laptop up and see if anything had changed. I've been using the laptop for about an hour now, and no sign of a BSOD, but upon startup, I received a message saying that this copy of Windows 7 may not be genuine, (It is most definitely genuine) and for a little while, my Avast Antivirus program refused to turn on.

I have been receiving a notification in the task bar for quite a while stating that my laptops battery may need replacing, and it doesn't hold charge for very long, but I always use it connected to a mains supply now. Could all of these problems be attributed to a hardware problem?

Elmarco, I would not think it is hardware, but with computers, anything is possible. I would more think it is software. Please upload the BSOD Posting instructions Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions to here and fill out your system specs in as much detail as possible. Maybe we can figure out what is going on.
Please fill out your System Specs
