sorry to sound completely dumb, but where would I find the Atheros driver? I thought I'd already done it but evidently not, don't want to make things worse by downloading the wrong thing
Search for your model here, then see if there is an updated Atheros network driver:
Notebook Computers | Laptops | Netbooks | Mobile Computers - SAMSUNG UK
Monkeypingo, try this and make sure this is your Laptop. At the bottom of the page are downloads for each operating system. If this is your Laptop find the Windows 7 downloads and bookmark the page, then look for the Atheros driver there. It should have all the latest drivers for your Laptop if it is the same one you have. Support for VPCEH1J1E | Sony
Sorry I had to be away for a while and needed to get a little sleep too. Thanks for Golden's help. He is very good on BSODs, in fact he taught me. I sure know I appreciate him helping.
Hi essenbe :) thanks for getting back to me! just did that it said its installed and the laptop restarted so I think it should be sorted now :) thank you both so so much!!
What did golden mean when he said..
' That HP Windows installation shouldn't be on the Sony - what version of Windows was originally installed on the Sony?'
Is this something I should be concerned about? :S
Thanks again for your time
just had another one only it stopped on blue screen this time rather than restarting, stop code 0x0D1? Then it said something about athrx.sys? :S and another code I saw f802cd7d7b?
What he was saying is that you have an OEM_SLP version of Windows. An OEM_SLP version is one that is only good on the computer it came from the factory installed on. Yours came from the Factory installed on an HP computer. You have a Sony computer. Therefore your Windows installation is counterfeit and illegal. If your Windows is activated, it is only possible to be activated with a special loader that alters system files. When System files are altered, you will probably always have trouble. Either you knowingly did that or whoever you bought the Windows from did it and sold you a counterfeit Windows OS. I suggest you contact whoever you bought the Operating system from and demand a refund and in any case either buy a legitimate copy of Windows or put the Operating System that came installed on your laptop from Sony back on. You may be able to get some assistance from Microsoft if you call them and tell them what happened. They may or may not help. But, if you bought it from someone, it may be worth a try.
Unfortunately, it is against Forum rules that we help anyone with any Illegal Software. If you will install a legal copy of Windows and still continue to have problems, we will be more than happy to help you.
I'm so angry right now, I can't believe I've been fooled like that. The amount of time I've spent researching and trying to understand what's going on and now I find that the underlying cause of this whole mess is that my laptop is not what I was led to believe. I'll be taking this straight back to him. I'll let you both know how it goes..
Thanks for your help regardless
No problem. Once you get it straightened out, if you still have problems, we will be happy to help you.
