    BSOD, Brand New Dell Desktop while running backup image and Inventor

    Hello,

    I recently just got a new Dell computer for one of my users and everything appeared to be working correctly on it. However, I tried to create a backup image and got to about 95% done before I got the BSOD. I was busy at the time so rebooted, patched it fully and waited until the next day.

    Now we have been running Inventor 2010 64-bit on it and got 2 more blue screens. It is the same type of blue screen error as the first one so I do not think it is related to what I was doing but a hardware/driver malfunction.

    I have attached the zip folder of minidump files.

    Please let me know if you have any ideas or what could be causing it.

    We need more information to analyze your logs. Follow Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions, let the tool run until it has completely finished and then upload the new logs.

    Here you are. I ran it as the admin account and it didn't run everything apparently. When I used my A account it ran fine. Let me know if you need any other info.

    Sorry about that.

    Thanks.

    That's good, thanks. Looking at your dumps they are all 0x124 which indicates a hardware error, unfortunately as with most 0x124s there is nothing in the dumps pointing towards what the problem is.
    Code:
    *******************************************************************************
    *                                                                             *
    *                        Bugcheck Analysis                                    *
    *                                                                             *
    *******************************************************************************

    WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR (124)
    A fatal hardware error has occurred. Parameter 1 identifies the type of error
    source that reported the error. Parameter 2 holds the address of the
    WHEA_ERROR_RECORD structure that describes the error conditon.
    Arguments:
    Arg1: 0000000000000000, Machine Check Exception
    Arg2: fffffa800f5cd028, Address of the WHEA_ERROR_RECORD structure.
    Arg3: 00000000f200003f, High order 32-bits of the MCi_STATUS value.
    Arg4: 00000000000100b0, Low order 32-bits of the MCi_STATUS value.
    Having looked at your Event Log there are some Throttle States showing at the time of your latest dump which could indicate overheating on your CPU.

    Can you let me know the temperature the CPU is running at both at idle and under load. If you need a temperature monitoring program let me know and I'll recommend one.

    What program do you recommend? I do not personally use this computer myself but have another user who does so I will not be able to watch it constantly. Just letting you know if that affects the program decision.

    Thanks.

    Well usually we recommend a set of stress and diagnostic tests to thoroughly examine 0x124s as we need to root out which piece of hardware is problematic, these do take a long time however. When you say you have a 'user' is this an employee who uses the PC? Are they fluent with a PC? Diagnosing a 0x124 with someone who isn't at least comfortable with a PC through 3rd hand instructions may not bode well.

    Yes they are a employee and I do not think they are very well versed in using a PC. I will have to stress test it for them when they are out for the day. Do you want me to run the built in diagnostic tool or do the temperature check like you said? It will have to be later tonight when they finally leave but I can do it then and get back with you tomorrow?

    Thanks again.

    Run the temperature check first. Download Speccy as linked in my sig and run the program, minimise the window then move Speccy from the Notification Area to the System Tray, that will display your CPU temperature by default. Monitor it while idle and under load.
    The BSODs aren't happening that often which is a bonus as it should give us some time to work through the troubleshooting steps, have the second and third BSODs happened while running Inventor? If your CPU temperature is getting too high under load we may be lucky enough to have our answer without running any stress tests.

    Yes, the last two where while running Inventor and the 1st one occurred when I first set up the new machine and I wanted a backup image.

    What is odd is that the same exact computer and model number is being used and it is also running Inventor but no BSOD on it. I am not sure why this one would overheat but the other not unless it is a fan issue maybe?

    I will install the program and report back what I find.

    Thanks.

    It could be that the CPU cooler is no fitted correctly or that the thermal paste hasn't been applied properly, maybe. I'm just surmising here on a little bit of evidence I've spotted but I think it may be the case. When Speccy is set up (it really doesn't take long) run Inventor at your convenience and record the temps over a period of time. Report back with the results.
