    Thanks for the input.

    I have done the following:

    1. Run diskpart clean all
    2. Reinstalled Windows 7 retail version and activated Windows
    3. Configured Windows Update to download but not install any updates (so that I have control)
    4. Installed Microsoft Security Essentials
    5. Installed TeamViewer

    That's it.

One thing that I just recalled it that both times I installed from Windows 7 retail version, the Synaptics Touchpad driver that was installed by Windows Update caused a Verifier issue/BSOD. Both times I had to download from the HP site manually to fix it. I wonder if that could have left some remnant of an issue causing the reboots??

    Thanks

I've gotta couple of hours if you want to private message me the Teamviewer ID/pw I'll connect and set it up for you.

Meanwhile type Sticky Notes in Start search box, open and expand a Sticky note on desktop to start a list of programs you use regularly to start with.

    Thanks!

At this point, I had decided to install just the Microsoft Security patches and IE 11. There are 124 updates I've marked for updating and are currently installing. It's taking awhile but can try to contact you when it's done (I do have a work meeting in 20 minutes). I tried to answer your PM but it was blocked -- sorry about that!

Note that I did not install any applications previously, except for MSE and anything needed for debugging this issue. And the rebooting was occurring in this state - basically after all Microsoft updates were applied (recommended and optional), and the HP-provided Synaptics touchpad driver. Nothing else was installed.

I just meant it was blocked by the pop up blocker in IE..... and after I allowed, it did not pop up for some reason.

    Update:

I installed all Security updates and IE 11. I did not install any other updates.

Unfortunate the laptop has rebooted a few times this morning.

I suppose I should back out some of the Security updates to try to nail it down??

    Thanks

what drivers are queued when you Check for Important and optional Updates?

What drivers are missing inDevice Manager?

I took a screenshot of the Device Manager. No exclamation points.

I also listed the updates that I did apply. But I'm not sure how to easily capture the ones that weren't installed.

    See attached files.

    Thanks

How did all the drivers get provided in Device Manager if none were installed by Windows Update? Did it start up with all of them installed?

When you Check for Updates, please post back a screenshot of the ones available under both Important and Optional.

I'm not sure why you only installed Security Updates as the OS is heavily patched by Performance Updates required so hardware, software and the OS will run correctly, and many drivers are delivered by Windows Updates too. So you want all Important and Optional Updates installed.

However to try to isolate exactly when the problem begins, you can install small groups of Updates and test performance after each. If this is what you did and the problem has now arisen which had not before this latest group of Updates, and you tested performance enough to know this for sure, then you can indeed System Restore before the group of Updates to see if the problem goes away, then install smaller groups of the same Updates to narrow down further which group has the problem Update. Same with Programs and settings.
