Random BSODs while gaming, watching video, or browsing in chrome

I keep getting blue screens ranomly. Every time it happens I'm too slow to catch a pic of it with my phone, so I don't have the exact error codes.

It happens about once a week at the moment, at completely random times. I have heat tracking software and my CPUs are always 90-100 degrees (F) while my video card has yet to pass 160 (F) - it is rated for 210. I'm sure it isn't the applications themselves because it has happened with GTA V, Warframe, Star Citizen, Netflix, HBOGO, Chrome, and OO4 Calc.

Please download from this site only http://www.memtest.org/ in the middle of the page are the Download links, you can download the ISO.zip or the Auto USB Flash Drive installer.zip

Extract the Zip file. If you chose the ISO image, burn it to a CD using Windows Disk Image Burner or any Image burner you may have. If you downloaded the Auto USB installer, extract it, insert your USB 2.0 Flash Drive and take note of the drive letter. Run the installer, select the Flash Drive Letter, check the format box and press next. It will install memtest86+ to a flash drive. You can use either V4.20 or V5.01. Boot from your selected media. If you use V5.01 it will tell you to press certain buttons at the start, please press no buttons. The test will begin on it's own and continue to run until you stop it. It needs to run for 8 complete passes all in one session or until you receive an error. If you receive an error, stop the test. Even 1 error is a fail. Each pass tests a different part of the ram and each of the 10 tests in each pass tests something different. It takes a minimum of 8 consecutive passes to completely test the ram, more passes are better. It is quite a long test and will take several hours depending on how much ram you have. Due to the time length it is best to run overnight. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Be aware that with your 16 GB of ram, it will take around 20 hours to run 8 passes. So, I would start it late at night and let it run through the night and the next day, or until you get an error. If you get even 1 error you can stop the test.

I had errors within the first few minutes. Not sure what it means, but I assume its an issue with either the mobo or RAM. Pic (not) attached (I had errors trying to upload, imgur link below).

Yes, that is most like your problem. It is, as you say, either Ram or Mobo. Run 1 stick at a time in each slot. A bad stick of ram should pass the 8 passes in each slot. A bad stick of ram should show errors in each slot. So, if you have a stick of ram that passes in 3 slots and fails in the other slot, chances are, you have a bad Mobo.

OK, thanks. I will try that out.

I've used an upload system similar to this in the past, so that's not an issue, it just kept failing to upload for some reason.

So far all sticks and all slots have passed. All combinations (2 and 3 at once in every slot setup possible, and swapping different sticks in and out with each config) have passed except one 3-stick config using a specific stick. 4 still does not pass.

I have tried adjusting all settings in the bios for power saving and overclocking. None make a difference for the setups that are failing.

I am running the stick that gave me problems in the 3-stick configs on its own again. No issues on the first pass, I will do a pass with it in each slot then run 8 to see if anything pops up.

Running a stick for one pass means nothing really. It takes 8 passes to fully test a stick. If I am understanding you correctly, it sounds like you have a bad stick of ram. But, I would RMA them all and get a complete set. Sets are tested to work well together, individual sticks are not.

Update: Since you mentioned that RAM comes in kits, it occurred to me that the person I got the PC from might have gotten 2 sets of kits (2 sticks each) rather than a full 4-kit. When all 4 ram slots are filled this mobo treats them like 2 dual channel sticks and requires the RAM be installed in the same color slot for sets (every other).

I swapped the RAM order around and ran memtest for a solid 20 hours, got 8 passes. Then I used the automatic overclocking functions in the bios and ran more passes. I didn't get a single error. So the problem was that he didn't install the RAM in the correct slots.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, this saved me a few hundred bucks. To think it was all because the guy who gave it to me didn't put the RAM kits in the right slots... He did a completely new build because of the BSODs and claimed he figured out it was the power supply when he gave it to me so I had to buy a new one. Wrong. Wasted a hundred on a power supply and was about to sink another $250 on RAM.

I'm not really sure that covers the problem, but if it works, that's good. You don't state what brand ram you have, but almost all of the major Manufacturer's have a lifetime warranty on their ram. Whenever you think your problem is fixed, please mark this thread as solved.
