    atikmpag.sys booting BSOD

    Hello,
another BSOD caused by atikmpag.sys problem. A few days ago, as usual after finishing my work with the PC, I hit the "Sleep" button. I waited a few seconds, but for some reason I decide it was taking too long (maybe because I was tired?) and turned off the pc.. directly from the power supply. The next day the strange problem appeared - I had an awful FPS drop in dota 2, which was caused by XCaudio or something (cant remember..). So I decided to update all of my drivers and I did and restarted the PC. The atikmpag.sys BSOD nightmare started. Usually my video card CPU fan (the stock one, dont have anny others) is really loud for 5-8 after powering up the pc, but this time, it was running loudly until the windows loading text appears. Then the BSOD appears. I tried a lot of things - rolling back the drivers, restore points, cleaning old software from the software etc. Nothing helped. So, I reinstalled the windows (W7 Ultimate, 32 bits), hoping the problem would go away. But it didn't. As soons as the updates from MS are installed, if I try to restart the pc, the pc would freeze. So, after a couple of windows installations (32 bits), I tried with the 64 bit version. The first thing I did was to install the AMD drivers. I restarted (successfully) and thought the problem was gone. Started installing additional drivers and after the second restart, the BSOD came again. So, I went to safe mode and used system restore. Now I have (almost) a clean Windows 7 - 64 bit version - only AMD + wireless are drivers installed.

The problem right now is that if I use the Sleep option it will wake up but a black screen would appear. If I turn off/restart the pc, I'd get a BSOD. Then I'd have to go to safe mode and restart from there to be able to login to windows normally.

I tried the "expand.exe" workaround and different AMD drivers solutions, but nothing seems to help. I'd appreciate it if you have any ideas what to do.

    BSOD error code: 0x116

Hello, hiho7. If you would please check your system specs and fill them out completely. Some of the information is wrong and some missing. You listed your CPU for your Motherboard. If you have an OEM system, please list the model number. This may help.

Please fill out your System Specs

       Information
Your System Specs will help us to help you, and doing it in this manner will make them available to all helpers in every post and keep us from hunting for them. We ask that you fill them out in as much detail as possible including Desktop or Laptop, Model number if it is an OEM computer and all components with the Manufacturer and Model number if possible.

If you will go to your last post and click the 'System Specs' in the bottom left of the post, you will find a link to update your system specs. Please fill those out in as much detail as possible, making sure to click save at the bottom of the page. If you would like to know what we would like, you can click 'My System Specs' at the bottom left of this post to see mine. If you do not know what your components are, this will help you accomplish this task. System Info - See Your System Specs

Pleaser make sure you have run all the Windows updates. If you have please look for KB3022345 and KB3068708. If you have them installed, please uninstall them (Windows Update - Uninstall an Update). If you have not installed them, right click them and select hide.

Then please open an elevated command prompt ( click start, type cmd in the search box, right click on the cmd entry and select run as administrator) in the black box that opens, copy/paste sfc /scannow. If you decide to type it, notice the space between the sfc and the /. It is a system file checker which will scan your system files and attempt to correct any missing or corrupt files. What we want are the results to say windows found no integrity violations. If it says files were found but could not be repaired, close the box, reboot and run it again, after opening the administrative command prompt. You may have to reboot and run it three times for it to repair all system files. If it can't repair them after 3 reboots, let us know.

Hello, essenbe, thank you for trying to help me.

Here's a list of the things I did:

    • filled everything (I think?) in the profile - not sure about the OEM systems..
    • installed windows updates (2 or 3 of them failed)
    • uninstalled the ones you told me to (only the second one was on the system)
    • restarted the pc, no bsod (guess this is a good thing?)
    • ran "sfc /scannow command" - 0 errors found
    • checked for windows updates - installed 3 more
    • restarted and windows loaded successfully
    • uninstalled KB3068708 again (forgot to unmark it)
    • restarted and windows loaded successfully
    • tried the "Sleep" fuction and no problems

I don't want to jump into conclusions, but the PC seems to be ok now.

I've been using Driverbooster 2 for quite a while and I've been quite happy with it. Now It says says I've got 22 out-dated drivers. Should I install them? Tbh, I'm a bit.. sceptical. My biggest concern is that everything is working (no booting/playing HD videos/in-game problems). What are your thoughts about that? I've uploaded a screenshot to check them out.

And one last question, if I may, why is turning the pc off from the power button on the case(not the PSU one) is bad?

    Thank you for everything.

I, and most everyone on these forums, would advise you to uninstall Driver Booster. Never let software update software. Most of your drivers can be downloaded rom you Motherboard's web site. You will know what you are downloading and where it is coming from. If it is not broke, don't fix it is what I think.

Yesterday when I tried the sleep function, I did for about 10 seconds (sleep, waited 10 seconds, then wake up). It was ok. I slept the pc once again, but this time for ~8 - waking the PC resulted in a black screen. The display's mini lamp stayed in a red-orange color. After shutting down the PC using the power button on the case and then turning it on, the light became green (as normal). Windows loaded without BSOD during the boot.

Are you talking about the power button color on the monitor not changing colors? If so, have you tried turning the monitor off and then on again when that happens ?

Yes, power button color (I'm not a native English speaker and it's a bit hard to explain it, sorry). I just slept the computer and the same thing happened - black screen after waking it up. Turning the monitor off and on resulted in a "NO VIDEO INPUT" message (I'm 100% it wasnt a windows message). I had to turn the pc from the power button. Then 2 BSODs appeared. My third try to boot was different - usually if the system isnt shut down the normal way, I get a menu with 4 options - safe mode, safe mode + networking, safe mode + cmd, load windows normally. This time it was just "repair windows"(or something) and load windows normally. I chosed the second option and this time no BSOD occured.

It was the same BSOD error - atikmpag.sys, 0x116. I ran the DM Log Collector again. Attached are the results.

    It's the same as always

    Code:

The message you received about no video input was the monitor message, not Windows, as you said. Am I correct that the only time you get a BSOD is waking up from sleep? If so, it seems that the video card is not waking up with the computer or the OS is not loading the drivers on wake up. I suspect it is the video card not waking up. Not always, but usually, that is a function of BIOS. Try going into BIOS and looking at your sata controller and see what mode it is set to (IDE,AHCI or Raid). Then set optimized defaults. Once you have set optimized defaults, go back and set your sata controller to what it is right now, make sure your ram is set to manufacturer's specs, set your boot order, save and exit. That should make sure everything in BIOS is correct.
