    NoelDP,

Work has me leaving, and I won't have access to the problem computer until a week from now. One quick question: the folder you created for me, i3kaa, has one file in it. Can I just copy that file into the winsxs folder while windows is running?

I'm just trying to work around the ownership/permissions/user login problem.

    Thanks again,
    Ken

It sounds as if the problem is that you're either using Safe Mode, rather than the Repair Environment - or you're using the wrong drive letter.
You cannot do copy in either Safe Mode or normal mode, because of permissions issues. That's why I instructed you to use the Repair Environment.
Be VERY careful about changing permissions in the winsxs folder - it can have serious consequences!

Gah! You are, of course, correct. I focused on the "boot menu option with a command prompt" part of the instructions. The only option with that was safe mode. I'll find out how to get the right mode to be offered at boot and try again.

    Thanks for your patience.

    NoelDP,

Thanks, once again, for your patience. I've run the xcopy with the i3kaa file as you instructed. Having run sfc /scannow, there was still an unrepairable error. (I did not run it 3x with reboots; per your instructions, I ran it once, then rebooted.) Attached is the new CBS file, labeled "CBS2".

    Thank you,
    Ken

I'll post another fix protocol later which should get rid of it

    I've uploaded a file - i3kab.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel'sOneDrive
    Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract

Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)

Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'

    Pick that

You'll have to log in with your username and password.
Pick the option to use a Command Prompt

    At the prompt type

    DIR C:\i3kab
hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
    DIR D:\i3kab
    or
    DIR E:\i3kab

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>)into the following command...

    XCOPY <drive>:\i3kab <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

    (e.g. XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )

run the command (it should take almost no time) and when the prompt returns, type

    EXIT

and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt

then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your reply

    NoelDP,

Done, and done. The new CBS file is CBS3, attached.

    Thanks,

Odd - the file I uploaded is definitely the right one - but it doesn't appear to have been copied into the right place for some reason.

Let's check a couple of things first...

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands

    Code:
     DIR C:\i3kab
     DIR C:\Windows\winsxs\i3kab
     ICACLS C:\Windows\WinSxS\msil_taskscheduler.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_en- us_21df7e00fbf2db0a\TaskScheduler.resources.dll

     .
    Post the results.

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)

    1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.

    2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the ECP Window, click on the black/white icon at topleft – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.

    3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit...'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

Work pulled me away from home, again. I'll do as you posted when I return on Saturday evening/night.

    Until then,
