BSOD every start-up after Dota 2, Error 0x00000116 - atikmpag.sys
What Happened:
I was playing Dota 2 when I got a black screen, but I thought it was perhaps just a cable that came loose or something. But I checked and made sure my HDMI cable was secure, and they were. I waited a minute or so but still nothing changed. So I shut my computer down (holding the button for several seconds).
Afterwards, I had a black screen still, and then I had green text "Recovery Error". And then I believe I rebooted and got a BSOD.
Everytime I get I start-up with my graphics card plugged in, I get a black screen/the BSOD. I haven't once been able to get on with my gpu in/on without safe mode.
Specs:
Windows Ultimate x64
Intel® Core™ i5-3570K Processor
MSI B75A-G43
Corsair CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9B Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB)
MSI AMD R7770-PMD1GD5 (AMD HD 7770)
Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003 1TB 7200 RPM
Corsair CX500
How I can log on:
-If AMD drivers are installed I can only boot with safe mode, otherwise I will get a black screen or the BSOD. Being on with safe mode, causes *
-If no AMD drivers are installed my computer uses a normal mode and *
-I can also log on by removing my gpu and my computer uses a 1280x1024 resolution.
*= my computer uses a VGA 640x480 resolution, and the colours are messed up.
CCC= AMD Catalyst Control Centre
Attempts:
-I have uninstalled my gpu display drivers from the device manager, uninstalled CCC and tried.
-Done the above but installed the latest CCC (15.7) from the AMD website
(Rebooting in between each step with gpu in but using safe mode)
-The above two steps but using DDU to clean up leftover driver files (removed the "atikmpag.sys" file) after uninstalling CCC and before rebooting and installing the latest CCC.
The dump files
-The first one is from my very first BSOD as described at the very beginning of this post.
-The second is after a few hours after working with the amd display drivers.
-And the third is after using the DDU attempt. One thing I noticed different about this dump file to the other two is that it says "SYMBOL_NAME: atikmpag+ccec" Instead of two saying "SYMBOL_NAME: atikmpag+bd88", I don't know much about this? But maybe it's worth pointing out.
Other things to note:
-I'm not sure, but I think maybe my gpu fan doesn't work. It worked the other day when I checked inside the case. But since I've been working on the bsod I haven't seen it move, I thought maybe it could be because of the bsod/maybe drivers. But the fan could have caused the bsod if it stopped and overheated?
-A few days before the BSOD I had this huge windows update, with critical updates I believe (I think I remember installing 16 updates whilst shutting the computer down).
If it is the gpu then I will get a new one, but I want to exhaust playing around with files and drivers and reading threads until I know for sure.
Any help/advice/information is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
