Windows 7: System Restore headache

System Restore headache

Last night something happened with my computer that caused it to hang on sleep and things started getting whacky after that. I believe a AVG update prompt was causing the computer to hang and not actually sleep fully.

Well the end result is Windows 7 did a preboot scan that fixed a corrupt registry(1 entry) and now everything I personalized is wiped. By that I mean the documents folder, desktop, and downloads folder is all wiped clean. I still have all of my apps but lost everything of real importance to me.

Attempts at using different restore points have failed to restore any of my documents and downloads. Is there any hope of finding my lost documents/downloads?

I am a win7 upgrade from XP so its a bit foreign to me. I was thrilled with the OS until this happened...ugh.

Windows 7

Ok I managed to locate some files by doing a specific search for them. The location they pop us is found.0000. Its a painful process to transfer the files over because I can't directly access these locations or at least I haven't figured out how to.

This is working fine for specific files but I am still without all of my specifics for programs like Firefox(missing bookmarks/themes/addons)

Windows 7

Ok Looks like I resolved my own problem(sort of). With a little bit of messing around and showing hidden files/system files I was able to access the found.0000 directory and gain access to all of my old files. Why Windows 7 didn't just restore them is beyond me.

Hopefully my posts help someone else should they come across this problem. You will need to edit permissions for all of these system files most likely or you will be unable to move them.
