I agree Archie except that the surface test with Partition Wizard does actually test out the physical surface and therefore by default the read / write heads

There are a number of programs that offer the disk surface test to detect the bad sectors on the surface of the disk. Seatools (and WinDFT etc dedicated disk check tools) does this job, plus some more. Seatools even attempt to recover those errors when some conditions are fulfilled.

Whatever, there is no need to run surface test (using PW, HD Sentinel or whatever) after Seatools test and/or WinDFT test. That will only be a partial duplication of work.

Well Archie I don't fully agree with that because to me a surface test will show me just what state the actual surface of the drive is like plus how well the read / write heads are working albeit at picking up bad sectors etc

I only brought this test up as an option and I do agree that Seagate is by far and away the first choice of tester.

To me it would be like knowing how well a car will stop in the wet without knowing how good the tread is ie the surface of the platter is damaged or the bearing of the spindle has warped or the heads and actuating arms have become distorted - then sure it is going to show up bad sectors how could it not?
