2 separate atikm?ag BSOD errors

Computer has been without issues for a pretty long time, but I got a BSOD several hours ago. It was only visible for a few seconds and I couldn't really read anything before it disappeared. I rebooted, everything seemed okay, so I just gave a figurative shrug and continued.

About 15 minutes ago I got another. This time I could see the offending culprit - atikm(couldn't read the next letter)ag.

Being essentially clueless about diagnosing BSODs, I turn to the experts.

Which is pretty old, I looked at HP for a driver but there are 84 models of the G62 to choose from.

If you want to provide the rest of the model number or just look at HP for the driver for your model.

You should always use the manufacturer drivers, on laptops especially. If there isn't one at HP there is the option below.


1. Go to Device Manager and expand Display Adapters.

2. Right click on your adapter and choose properties.

3. Select the Driver tab and choose uninstall.

4. When finished, reboot the computer and let Windows install the available WHQL driver.

I have no idea where to find the exact model of this laptop. I went to HP Advisor and assumed the information would pop right up. It's been sitting here saying 'Product Name Loading...' for well over a half hour.

Yeah, honestly, I'd be surprised if there was an updated driver there anyway.

This method is probably a better option,

1. Go to Device Manager and expand Display Adapters.

2. Right click on your adapter and choose properties.

3. Select the Driver tab and choose uninstall.

4. When finished, reboot the computer and let Windows install the available WHQL driver.

I let that (non-functioning) HP Advisor run all night, assuming that it would eventually display the full model. It did not. But, according to a separate HP tool I just ran, this is an HP G62-340US Notebook PC. I can supply the serial and product numbers if needed.
HP Software Drivers and Downloads tell me that the proper graphics driver is an AMD High-Definition Graphics Driver (Version - 8.770.2.2000 Rev. A, Size - 134.0 MB, Updated - Aug 7, 2015), but the current driver is AMD M880G with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250. Additionally if I right-click on the driver in Device Mgr I get the message that the best driver is already installed. So I remain confused.

I see that driver listed there at HP and it is a slightly newer version than what shows as installed in your system info.

What you are calling the current driver is actually the graphics card.

That is the usual response when doing that, that's not quite what I was asking you to do though.

I wanted you to uninstall from device manager and when restarting let windows install the driver it finds.

That is all moot now anyway, you found the driver at HP so nevermind the uninstall I mentioned.

No problem, I understand. That driver should have no effect on your external HDD so this is a strange occurrence. Can you run the DM tool again, I want to see if anything obvious pops up.

If it continues to act like that I would try this method instead.

The one from before is gone but it screwed up your USB controllers.

You can uninstall CCC completely from control panel if you haven't already.

Can you try the other method I asked you to hold off on now, doing the uninstall through device manager. Then reboot, windows will see the hardware needs a driver and it will install one.

This is not a normal effect of just updating a graphics driver, I suspect it corrupted your chipset drivers as well as messing up the USB controllers.

Let's just start by removing CCC from programs and features, then the driver uninstall. Do not reboot until both have been uninstalled.
