You would need to install the drivers from your manufacturer only. Other drivers give problems, telling from experience.

I am aware of it yes, I have read the thread 25 times excluding now.
Please create a restore point before you update your graphics drivers.
After you have created a restore point, boot into safe mode and run DDU.
After you have run DDU, boot back into normal mode and install the graphics drivers from your manufacturer.

Please let me know how it goes and what problems you encounter if there arise any.

I don't wish to seem contrary, but I had so many problems before....

You see, I specifically asked you if you meant for me to download the drivers from AMD or from HP. You replying that I "need to install the drivers from your manufacturer only" doesn't exactly answer the question. Both entities could certainly be considered the 'manufacturer'. And you also told me that "there is an update for the AMD graphics drivers". That's kind of nebulous isn't it? If you know that there's an update for the driver, why keep that information to yourself? What exactly is the driver and where specifically should I be downloading it from?

HP. Especially with laptops, you want to use the computer manufacturer, not the device manufacturer.

derekimo, didn't we do all this just a month or so ago? So of course, without any specific feedback from axe0, I went to the AMD website, downloaded their graphics tool, which runs through your system and tells you what driver to download, and even provides a link.

It wants me to download AMD M880G with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 which it lists as the correct graphics hardware and 13-9-legacy_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc_whql.exe as the driver. The AMD M880G is already listed in Device MGR as my display adapter, but I don't know how to display the current driver.

Yes we did. It will offer you a driver just because it can provide one, if you read this,

GPU-28041: Information on AMD Mobility Radeon Graphics Drivers for Microsoft Windows

    Recommendation:
AMD recommends using the graphics drivers provided by your notebook's manufacturer as the manufacturer may customize the drivers to support the built-in display and the features and functions specific to the notebook. Customized graphics drivers are available for download from most notebook manufacturer's web site.
If the current operating system is not the version originally installed on the notebook it may not meet all requirements and compatible graphics drivers may not be available. Please refer to the notebook manufacturer for supported operating systems and drivers.
You'll see why I said that above.

You can see the driver version you have installed on the properties window, driver tab in device manager.

This is a pic of mine to show you.

    Attachment 375667

It's also in your msinfo32.nfo file you uploaded,

    Code:
    Driver	c:\windows\system32\drivers\atikmpag.sys (8.14.1.6143, 272.50 KB (279,040 bytes), 9/20/2010 1:21 AM)
Or as the OEM labels it,

    Code:
    Driver Version	8.770.2.1000

It is so easy to get confused with this stuff. I went to HP Drivers and Downloads page for this laptop and downloaded the only graphics driver listed - 8.770.2.2000 Rev. A, 134.0 MB, updated Aug 7, 2015

The executable file that appears on my desktop when I download it is called SP50717. It is 137,175 KB and identical in name and size to the file I downloaded when this problem first surfaced. Since HP lists the driver's date as 8/7/2015 and the original problem was first reported here on 10/6/2015, it seems certain that this is the exact same driver I downloaded before. Why the driver now displays as 8.770.2.1000 is a complete mystery, unless it's somehow related to the difficulties I subsequently had with my USB ports.

    As I said - I'm confused.

It probably is the same driver you have now, the dates are only a month apart.

    Attachment 375683

Just recently repackaged or some other pointless reason to show it updated.

I am not going to answer in my sleep at 2AM

Usually when we say 'manufacturer', we mean the manufacturer of the laptop which in this case is HP. Normally one wouldn't say manufacturer with a GPU, but the name of the company.

And you also told me that "there is an update for the AMD graphics drivers". That's kind of nebulous isn't it? If you know that there's an update for the driver, why keep that information to yourself? What exactly is the driver and where specifically should I be downloading it from?
I am new with giving details for drivers, I didn't know what details were needed.
Honestly, I am new with lots of things regarding BSOD debugging.

You did try to reinstall the drivers, but I haven't seen it tried with Display Driver Uninstaller.

I understand you are reticent, but if you won't try we can't make a new step and won't be able to help.

    So far, so good...
I downloaded DDU, set a restore point, booted into safe mode, ran DDU, uninstalling all AMD product, booted into normal mode, ran the executable display driver previously downloaded, unchecking everything but the AMD driver (and the Catalyst Control Center, which could not be unchecked), and rebooted again.

I checked the driver and it's now listed as 8.770.2.2000, instead of 1000, as it was before.

My USB ports seem to be working, so hopefully all is good, although in the interests of full disclosure, I've only had 2 BSOD episodes since post #25 of this thread, so going a couple of hours without a blue screen is no proof that it's permanently fixed.
