    Freezing/BSOD - PFN_LIST or memory problem?

My computer is about five years old, custom build (from the internet, I'm not that savvy!), works mostly fine. Today, I've had a range of different crashes.

First was while playing KOTOR 2; computer froze and emitted constant beep. Had to power off to stop

Since then, it's only sporadically booting. Sometimes it gets to the POST beep and sometimes not. If it does get that far, only runs for a while (no more than 20 minutes so far) before freezing again. Doesn't seem to matter what I do (once in game, then when running a backup, then twice just on startup after the desktop was visible). I've only had two actual BSODs; the first said PFN_LIST_CORRUPT, the second MEMORY_MANAGEMENT. I'll try and record the 0x codes the next time I get any.

The only thing I've installed lately is KOTOR 2, which has run fine for a few days until now.

I've tried to use Driver Verifier, but the computer wouldn't restart for several tries after I ran it

My second BSOD was on trying to get into safe mode to run Verifier a second time. Later managed to get into safe mode, but then it froze on me after 5 minutes.

Not had the constant beep sound since the first crash

What should I do next? With my computer barely functional, I'm not sure how much I can get in the way of diagnostic logs

    Hi DifferentlySane,

    Welcome to the 7forums.

Please read BSOD Posting Instructions & How to upload files

The 0x4E(PFN_LIST_CORRUPT) and the 0x1A(MEMORY_MANAGEMENT) are both related to the memory.
Please read the instructions below carefully for testing the memory.

    Diagnostic Test

     RAM TEST

Run MemTest86+ to analyse your RAM. MemTest86+ - Test RAM - Windows 7 Forums

       Note

MemTest86+ needs to be run for at least 8 passes for conclusive results. Set it running before you go to bed and leave it overnight. We're looking for zero errors here. Even a single error will indicate RAM failure.

Sorry it's taken me a while to reply; I don't have a lot of time to spend on my pc these days

Okay, I've run MemTest a bunch of times; the first pass with all memory returned a ton of errors. Running each stick individually in the first slot returned none (8+ passes each, as recommended).

Then a much more technically competent friend of mine lent a hand and we ran a bunch of tests, but the patient behaved itself and didn't crash at all. Intermittent errors are the worst errors.

Then it started crashing again. My BSOD list now includes MEMORY_MANAGAMENT and BAD_POOL_HEADER and something about system service. Generally, a first crash of a day just freezes and dies without a BSOD though.

I've run another round of MemTest, and this time had no errors on the full configuration (9 passes). I might try the memory sticks in pairs, or jsut let it run with only some of them and see what happens. I've not tried Driver Verifier again yet.

Anyway, I've attached my DM Log; hope it's of some use.

I would first make sure the faulty stick/slot is known and not used anymore before running driver verifier.
    Code:
    FOLLOWUP_NAME: MachineOwner

    IMAGE_NAME: hardware

    DEBUG_FLR_IMAGE_TIMESTAMP: 0

    IMAGE_VERSION: 6.1.7601.19045

    STACK_COMMAND: .cxr 0xfffff880088c4f60 ; kb

    MODULE_NAME: hardware

    FAILURE_BUCKET_ID: X64_IP_MISALIGNED

Will do; I'll try and test them all today. Does the code block you posted point to a memory stick/slot as being the problem?

It only says hardware problem but nothing specific unfortunately.
If we didn't knew a memory stick was giving errors in the test, it would also mean other components are causing problems.
