BSOD playing Rocket league - and issues with 360 controller + USB port

    Hi everyone.

First, a quick history. I'm using a desktop machine I 'built' in 2013, and hasn't had much use in the last year because I use OS X / Linux for work and school. The past few weeks I've been using it again for games and such, and up until a couple of days ago, things were going swimmingly. There was one issue, though, which was one of the audio jacks started to be buggy, which I don't believe had happened before. I had to hold my headphones in at a certain angle to get the "full" amount of sound to come through. I did a workaround with another port. Otherwise no problems.

Yesterday, I started to get some issues with the machine where when I was in-game (Rocket League), the machine would sometimes freeze up - not BSOD, but the cursor and display would stick. No keyboard input possible. Interestingly, the audio for the game would continue and "loop" properly - the song would continue. I think it did this indefinitely until I force powered off, but I'm not sure. I updated all my drivers (Driver Booster 3) and ran Malwarebytes to see if that would help things - it did not. I play with an xbox 360 controller, and at one point I remember plugging it into a USB port and it instantly freezing, so that seemed like a likely culprit. Seeing as I was starting to go down a rabbit hole, I just decided to reinstall windows. I did so last night without problem, and re-downloaded all my essential program. Mostly innocuous stuff - skype, steam, and so on. Nothing non-essential is on the PC right now. I used Driver Booster 3 again to auto update all my drivers, and also installed some security things (malwarebytes, microsoft security essentials, Spybot S&D).

Now I'm getting some more weird issues. For one, it appears that some of my USB ports are now dead. I try to plug in my wireless wifi adapter into one of them on the front (USB 2.0) and it works, but it is not recognized in the other one (USB 3.0). I know for sure it was recognized before I reinstalled Windows 7 yesterday. Mouses and keyboards don't work in this port either. If I enter Rocket League and play for about a minute with the controller, everything will freeze and I'll get a BSOD - something along the lines of "Attempt to reset display driver and recover from time out failed". Furthermore, sometimes I get the non-BSOD freeze and have to force restart too, in Rocket League. Finally, and this is new, when writing this post I went to do something nondescript in Explorer, and suddenly my Monitor turned off (No Signal), and I wasn't able to do anything about it. Not a physical connection issue. Had to restart.

Oddly, I seem to be able to play on Rocket League with no risk for BSOD without the controller plugged in. Not exactly sure how to test this.

It's sounding like a hardware problem to me, but it'd be nice if it wasn't. But if so, it'd be nice to know what I have to replace.

I've attached the log as instructed, but it might not have the most recent BSOD in there because I've had to force restart 2 or 3 times since the last one (because of freezes or monitor issues). I can recreate on if needed, I think.

Thanks for the help, I'll try to get whatever is requested ASAP.

    Hi Var18,

    Welcome to the 7forums.

I have global read your post, have opened 1 file and I see 2 problems without looking at everything else.

    1. Driver Booster 3
    2. An outdated Windows 7
    Code:
    OS Version: 6.1.7600 N/A Build 7600
I need you to do 2 things before we can continue.
    1. Please remove the drivers installed by Driver Booster 3, let me know what drivers you have installed with Driver Booster 3 so we can check together for the right updates :)
       Warning
Programs that claim to update your drivers install either the wrong or corrupted drivers.
If you have installed any driver with Driver Booster 3, please remove them as it may cause trouble.

    2. Please update your Windows installation, you need to have at least Windows 7 with Service Pack 1 installed and about 200-300 or more hotfixes installed after the service pack is installed.
After the updates have been installed, it is recommended to run a system file check in case of corruption as system files sometimes become corrupted after updating.

    Diagnostics Test

     System File Check

    Please try following:
    • Open an admin command prompt
    • Copy/paste "sfc/scannow" (without quotes) and press enter
    • When it finished reboot your system
    • Open again an admin command prompt
    • Enter sfc/scannow again

If sfc/scannow does NOT say "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violation", please upload the cbs.log file located at {windows partition}\Windows\Logs\CBS\, if the file is too large try a 3rd party uploader like dropbox, onedrive, google drive, mediafire etc.
System File Check(SFC a.k.a. Windows Resource Protection) needs to have your system rebooted in order for sfc to try to fix the problems that it finds.

    Thanks for the reply axe0.

I have gone into the Driver Booster 3 interface but I can't find a log where it says what drivers it updated. It updated about 18 of them if I recall correctly. However, some of the drivers had a "rollback option", and I rolled everything back I could, which was:

    Code:
    amd hd (audio)?
    radeon hd 7700 graphics
    ide ata/atapi controllers
    82801 pci bridge 224E
    intel management engine interface
    realtek high def audio
    realtek pci
Problem is, this is not the 18 drivers I remember it installing. Is there a way to revert drivers to default, or to see which have been updated? Perhaps I should just do a fresh install of windows again, to be sure? That might be problematic, though, because I won't be able to force a BSOD like I can right now, to figure out what the problem is. Let me know if you think I should do the reinstall.

I'm downloading the windows service pack 1 right now and will do the diagnostic test after that is all good and installed. Then I'll post back (unless you've responded about the reinstall).

Edit: Quick question for you, what is the recommended way to update your drivers? I know the "best" way is to go to the manufacturer website and look for the one you need ... but how do I know which ones need updating - and what do I do if a driver is not available as per the manufacturer? A URL link would be appreciated :)

I think I know what drivers have been installed with DB3, I'm not sure if it would reach about 18 drivers but I do know it could help so I do not yet think that a fresh install is needed.

OK, so here's what I did today:
-rolled back all drivers I could see with Driver Booster 3 **I don't know if I got all of them**
-Installed my graphics driver manually from AMD's website
-Got all my windows updates, which took a really long time (hours)
--Updated most of them, including SP1
--HOWEVER, there are 3 that won't seem to update. I ran a windows update fix tool provided my Microsoft, and I got a problem found: Windows Update error 0x80070005.

In addition, I think the three updates that failed are:
    Update for W7 x64 systems (KB2868116)
    Security Update for W7 x64 systems (KB3033889)
    Security Update for .NET 3.5.1 on W7 ... (KB2978128)

When I say they "fail", what happens is I Check for Updates, I find 3, and I install them through Windows update, and after they "install" it says they failed with error code 80246007. Windows officially suggests this means I have a virus or something, but I highly doubt that (ran malwarebytes). Also I run Windows Update without any other program running.

-Regardless, I did sfc/scannow and that worked, no integrity violations.

So, it sounds like my remaining problems are:
    -Windows update not fully working
-Not all my drivers are updated, waiting for instructions
-Just tested it again, if I plug in my 360 controller (specifically!) and play rocket league, it freezes about about a minute and I get a BSOD. I'll attach the log from this most recent crash.

*final update* After doing all of the above - experiencing no crashes the whole time (after rollbacking the Driver Booster 3 ones) - I ran Rocket League with my 360 controller as I said above. Got a BSOD, and in the last two attempts to restart my computer and generate a BSOD log, I get the same "display" issue as before - monitor turns off, "no signal", I have to force restart. It happens completely randomly. Top candidates for this are 1) Missing some drivers, 2) The AMD driver I installed is faulty, 3) The 360 controller driver just messes things up, 4) Hardware.

Here's the most recent log. The events leading up to it: BSOD, reset, opened 360 controller driver (here) for curiosity, display error 5m later, force reset, display error 1m after startup, force reset, log created, this post.

EDIT: One more piece of info. After this post, computer worked fine for over an hour. Then, just to check, I opened the 360 controller driver program (see link above) and it crashed within 20 seconds. So that's at least part of the problem!

EDIT 2: Did a little more research, a lot more headache. When I plug in my 360 controller, it fails to install its driver (I get a popup about it). In the device manager, what's weird is that connecting it creates 2 devices - an unknown controller device, and a Microsoft Common Controller for Windows Class. I know it makes these two because I can uninstall both drivers, plug it back in, and they will both reappear. I've tried manually pointing the controller to a 2009 driver version via device manager (which seems to be the default), and it still crashes with this. Tried deleting one of them and using the other, but still seems to fail. I won't rule out the possibility that there may be a fix here, but I've tried at least a few things.

Also could be a usb port issue. I got my front USB 3.0 port working by searching for a driver online - device manager couldn't fix it itself.

EDIT 3: Fixed the USB issue by installing another USB driver (Intel this time, not ASUS). No more unrecognized USB devices, but still get BSOD when playing w/ the controller.

EDIT 4: For your post below, here are the following drivers I'm getting from the asus site
    -the most recent bios driver
    -realtek audio v5100
    -mei_v810 ...
    -Intel graphics v8151...
    -itel usb v10523...
    -Asmedia win7 81_...

    Can't see anything else applicable.

I've just flashed the most recent bios on, successfully. Also updated all the drivers I listed in my post above. However, the intel graphics drivers says my computer doesn't have the specifications for it or something, not sure if that matters. Regardless, played Rocket League for about 5 minutes and then got a crash, same as normal.

Do you plug in your 360 controller in the same port everytime?
